I use a clothes prop as well. And I used to love the smell of the washing boiling.
My step-father had his own equipment for mending shoes, and every few weeks it would all be spread about the kitchen, with sheets of leather waiting to be cut up for heeling and soling of everyone`s shoes.
And I know it`s possible to buy rug making kits, but my mother used to cut up all our old clothes into strips, and spread the canvas backing across a frame, and spend every day and some evenings making our hearthrugs, using half a clothes peg. They were lovely thick rugs, lasted ages.
