My elderly mum had several minor strokes last week and is currently in hospital. Until now, I have been managing and helping her to remain at home despite her limitations of ageing, and all the issues that brings.

Had it not been for other GNs on previous threads mentioning that home support from Social Services should be put in place, I would have been less informed and less able to 'stand my ground' and insist on the necessary support being put in place before they discharge her from hospital care.

As of yesterday, she has been receiving physiotherapy, has been taken to an home assessment area within the hospital and Social Services are delivering aids to her home tomorrow.

The Occupational Therapist has arranged for carers to call every day to assist her with showering and personal care. Mum has objected to this, insisting she is a private person and doesn't like strangers in her house! Dealing with difficult parents is a nightmare but she was eventually persuaded that his was in her best interests.

Anyway, I just wanted to pop on to say a big THANK YOU! to all who have posted previously with great advice.

I do hope this all works out well for your Mum. Many elderly people do not want carers going in, but I have lost count of the number of times when they eventually became great pals with the carers and looked forward to their visits.

Hope all goes well Lin, and your mum recovers her strength. Sounds like you have had good service from the different authorities. Good luck.

Hopefully your mum will be glad of the carers when she goes home, and it should be a help for you too. flowers

Glad that it is working out well for your Mum Lin. Is the care package for a limited time?
My cousin was in hospital after a variety of problems including a small stroke - she had a care package for three weeks and after that it stopped unless she paid for it. She is on pension credit etc and could not afford to pay so is left to her own devices and the help her family are able to provide.

Thank you all. Welshwife I assumed the care package would be permanent, but you have made a good point and I will have to have this confirmed.

Someone on pension credit should not be paying for care.

I don't have carers as I can make food and wash myself, but I do pay myself for anyone else who has to come in to help me, cleaner, gardener, decorator, handyman, dog walker. Even with my son at home for a few weeks I will carry on with my routine as it's only fair to the people to get their wages, and they have been there for me when I have had no one to do things for me.

Social services brought a bath lift for me. I charged the unit, got the seat up, filled the bath, sat on the seat, no charge! I'm there, suspended in mid air, legs dangling into the bath and that is how I had to wash today. So unit back on charge for a lot longer! It was a good job I was on my own. I found it quite funny though. grin I am getting a stair lift too, so that I can get to the bathroom without getting out of breath as much as I do now.

rubylady I know your predicament wasn't funny, but that brought a smile to my face...the first in days!

I'm at the end of my tether ATM. I've spent the last few days, cleaning my mum's house. She won't allow me to do anything while she's there, so I'm taking this opportunity while she's in hospital to do everything that's been neglected for some time. Her entire kitchen and bathroom needed a deep clean etc. I've had additional keys cut for the carers, I waited at her house for over 6 hours to take delivery of various aids which will help her around the house. And then last night, one of my 2 brothers who visited her in hospital said she was accusing me of doing things behind her back!

I have had zero support from either of my brothers (other than the usual platitudes) and now they are assigning gender specific roles, which excludes them...obviously!

Sorry for having a rant!
