New Denture today......strugglin g....

Hoping to get some support and advice.

I've had a partial upper denture ( 3 front teeth and one back) fitted today due to the old crown posts being too poor to re-ctown. I lost my 2 front teeth at 13 years old due to be head butted in the mouth.

I'm managing to talk okay a part from S sounds, but struggle to eat, and have so much excess saliva I wonder if I'll choke! I've currently no fixodent on and it feels stable enough - I'm just sore where teeth were extracted.

I was told to leave for 24 hours before salt water gargle and clean. Not sure how to clean my existing teeth tonight?
What do I clean the denture with? I have been given a brush.

Feeling despondent and a failure it's come to this ?

Thanks for reading

Yes, hang in there deni. Hopefully once the dentist has adjusted it a bit you'll find things much easier. Its horrible, I know. X

Denil it takes a bit of adjusting to get the best fit , given some help from your dentist you will be fine

Deni1963 Sat 09-Sep-17 19:40:37

I really don't know I think so - going back Monday - feeling quite low about it all x

MissAdventure Sat 09-Sep-17 15:44:55

Is it the denture fit, do you think, deni?

Deni1963 Sat 09-Sep-17 15:25:25

My speech feels worse today ?

aggie Fri 08-Sep-17 16:19:04

yes it can , ring the dentist

Deni1963 Fri 08-Sep-17 16:15:32

I've noticed today I cant actually bite - the reason is on the left my natural bottom teeth are hitting the plastic on upper denture right at the back so it moves - it's not fitting behind my top teeth ? can this be fixed?
The right side fits behind my natural teeth. HELP

Yay ! At least you have some respite ?
Hi coolgran - that's all good to know - I am.struggling with eating a lot - does the fuxodent really help?

Deedaa Thu 07-Sep-17 22:27:52

Yay! I've hadf a let off! Today turned out to be a preliminary fitting of part of the plate. He can't fit me in for the extractions till the end of October, but has promised to ring if they have a cancellation.

I use the 3 minute stuff 'sort of' daily, miss the occasional day.
I use the Fixodent sometimes. My denture feels fine but if I was going out to eat I might use the Fixodent.

My existing partial denture was added to and fitted immediately following further extractions and without any difficulty. No soreness. Dentist said that I will probably need a new denture in about 6 months when all healing has taken place and gums have changed. The 6 months are nearly up and it still feels fine --- excepting the occasional Fixodent which is more for peace of mind/just in case.

MissAdventure Thu 07-Sep-17 18:49:48

I hope so too! Gums are very fast healing, so I'm sure you'll be feeling much more confident by then.

Deni1963 Thu 07-Sep-17 18:46:01

Thank you - I'm going to Portugal in 3 weeks so hope by then it all feels better x

MissAdventure Thu 07-Sep-17 17:38:09

It may loosen, but your dentist will be able to line it to fit properly, deni.

MissAdventure Thu 07-Sep-17 17:26:13

I can't help with that, deni.
I had to wait a week for my denture, as my dentist said that gums shrink after extractions. Of course, I bumped into almost everyone I haven't seen for years during that week! If you've no sore spots, that must be good
It seems everyone does differently with regard to cleaning. I would imagine the three minute stuff is supposed to be used everyday.

Deni1963 Thu 07-Sep-17 17:21:38

I have the 3 minute cleaning fizz - is it daily? I'm so confused by everything to remember - is it likely to become loose over time? I had 3 extractions before immediate denture - not sure when soft spots occur but so far no sores .....talking is hard and my confidence is taking a bashing ?

Good luck folks! - no personal experience but hope it all settles down for you.

I had the strangest tip given to me by a work colleague. I worked 12.5 hour shifts in my last job, and the new denture was rubbing terribly. By the last few hours my glands were swelling in my neck and I felt really rough. My colleague told me that a tiny piece of a cigarette paper works on raw patches as a barrier between your mouth and the denture. It worked!! Oh happy, happy days!

Judging by the problems mentioned I think I've been very lucky. I gagged a bit on the way home and that's been it. I clean them twice a day with toothpaste and pop them into steradent once a week. I use Fixodent and forget about them but I tend to take them out at night unless the GC are staying! I had repeat visits to the dentist as part of the package and he filed a bit here and there a couple of times to ensure a good fit as when the swelling died down from the extractions they needed slight adjustment. I now have 6 monthly appointments to check on my mouth as a whole. If anyone isn't happy with their dentures do get them checked out.

How are you Deedaa? I'm struggling today, feel ill because eating is hard and low, but it's early days x

Auntieflo Thu 07-Sep-17 13:15:41

Of, not if, sorry,

Auntieflo Thu 07-Sep-17 13:15:15

Thinking if you today Deedaa, hope all goes well.

Deni1963 Wed 06-Sep-17 22:23:38

Deedaa best of luck - update me tomorrow . I've managed some yoghurt as well - and I'm singing a lot ! So far it's not as bad as I had feared.
What are you having done?

Deedaa Wed 06-Sep-17 21:52:41

This is going to be me tomorrow Denil ! It's really helpful to read the replies here. My mother never had false teeth so it makes me feel a bit of a failure to need them, but hopefully it will all be fine.

LadyGracie Wed 06-Sep-17 20:16:28

I must admit after the first night I do take it out at night and it's back in first thing in the morning, I dare say I could wear it at night now I'm quite comfortable with it. I do find the fixodent makes it easier to eat too, the instructions say to use in 3 places I use about 1/4 inch in the middle only, in a front to back direction. Give it time, it gets easier.

Deni1963 Wed 06-Sep-17 19:43:34

Toothpaste is abrasive for the denture ? someone said use normal washing up liquid! Yes I've got a whistling S but haven't used any fixer as yet.
I've had 2 soft eggs. Tried bread ? that was hard!
I told my dentist it isn't coming out at night and she told me all her patients say that!
