I`m not sure if it was January `79 or `80, but we were living in a tiny Lincolnshire hamlet, 9 miles from town, and we got up one morning to horrendous weather. It wasn`t too bad on our lane, only about an inch deep, but our neighbour informed us that the 2 roads across the top and bottom of the lane were impassable. We were cut off for 2 days, couldn`t go to work, run out of money, the coalman was due so no coal, we were searching the house for anything we could burn. On the 2nd day in the afternoon, David walked down to the bottom road and said it wasn`t bad, not very deep, just sticking up across the road in ridges, so he said we`d be able to drive along there. The first ridge we came to we got stuck on it, the snow was frozen solid, so I sat there so embarrassed as a tractor was brought to tow us off! The following day we tried again and got to the main road a few miles away, to find snow about 20` high on both sides of the road, with little pockets cut out every so often to allow for passing. We arrived at the first garage just as the petrol ran out, we coasted in on fumes!
