Been married 53 years, the best thing that ever happened to me . Still have my wedding dress packed carefully away in tissue, a short dress as that was the in thing. My shoes were little satin printed ones with pointed toes and not very comfortable. Still have all the little cards that came with the gifts and telegrams (we had those then) and acceptance cards. All packed carefully away with my photos. Grandchildren love looking at them!

This is the 21 C but the term ' going away' outfit is still used by many and, surprise surprise ?? so is the throwing of the brides bouquet.
Many brides change from their wedding dress into something different should the wedding day extend into the evening. If they are going away on honeymoon many will also change to 'go away in' unless it was an informal wedding. funds maybe limited , or the brides outfit could be worn anytime.

I remember my wedding shoes. They crippled me! My going away outfit was an expensive yellow trouser suit. Years later my daughter used to dress up in it for a laugh. We honeymooned in Torquay, but spent the first night in a London hotel. I still have my wedding dress and veil bundled up in the back of the wardrobe. Maybe a future generation will want to wear it.

I knitted my first wedding dress/cap held into place with Alice Band and had to thread 96 yards of baby ribbon through the holes. Being knitted on the bus going to work, needed a good wash before the day. And comfy flat slip on shoes. Second wedding MIL made my and 3 small bridesmaids dresses with bought creamy white wide-brimmed hat. Was 7 months pregnant, but all fitted perfectly. Don't remember what I had on my feet!

I have been married 3 times and I can remember all my shoes, just wish I could forget the past husbands (current one is lovely)
1974 - silver platforms with round toes and ankle strap
1982 - white and gold sandles with stiletto heels
1999 - cream leather court shoes

Shoes were white leather, pointy toes, with a punched floral pattern.
Still have the dress, veil, hooped petticoat, headdress, bouquet and cake topper in a suitcase in the loft.
I didn't want real flowers as I hate seeing flowers dying quickly, so a friend made my headdress, bouquet and cake topper all to match, from silk. They were, and still are, beautiful!
Our photo was in the local paper twice, the first time they printed it backwards, spelled my first name wrongly, and worst of all, 'married' me to the best man instead of the groom
So, we appeared again the following week, along with a grovelling apology!

My mother and I designed my dress and she made it. It was a fabulous white halter-neck dress with a sheer silk chiffon coat for modesty. It was the early 70s so my sandals had a slight platform - quite trendy now, actually! My going away outfit was in navy and yellow - navy skirt and blouse and bright yellow jacket. We honeymooned in Paris, staying at the apartment belonging to family friends (yes, lucky!) then a few days in Normandy.

The dress was worn on many occasions afterwards for balls and posh do's. The coat was made into a christening gown for my daughter.

I cannot remember my veil!

I've still got my shoes and occasionally wear them! Moss green suede with laces and heels. My dress was a brown Laura Ashley, which we chose together (still got that too!). We married in church but with a tiny congregation of 12 and I didn't want to wear white.

Same as Jalima, satin white court shoe. In those days the local paper showed pictures of the couple, and usually added that they left for a honeymoon in wherever, the bride dressed in whatever outfit. I’ve still got the cutting (somewhere).

I remember the registry office ceremony quite well, at the end, he leaned over the desk to shake hands with us both, and said "Congratulations, that will be 7/6 please!"

I made my own wedding dress - a full-length dress with a high neck and long sleeves, in white broderie anglaise. I do remember the shoes, they were little flat ballet pumps.

I also made my "going-away" dress; we don't hear much about those nowadays because, I suppose, couples tend not to go away on the wedding day, they stay partying at the reception all evening and the spend the night somewhere nearby.

My DM was totally horrified that we didn't want a church wedding and was adamant that 'you don't get dolled up for a registry office do!' So I dutifully complied and wore a smart (if boring)suit. The sad thing was that my little sister who would have loved a pretty bridesmaid dress was also forced into a very unflattering suit which we both remember only too well! DM was definitely in charge! I remember very little of my big day but we are still very happy after 53 years.

We were married in a registry office, and I cannot remember anything about it. I remember What I wore.What my dad wore. Going in the car and taking ages to park. All of the reception afterwards. But nothing at all about the ceremony itself. We have been married nearly 53 years so I don't suppose it matters really in the grand scheme of things

Golden Wedding next year and I can't remember a thing about his proposal...

so my 'going-away' outfit got me as far as Bristol

We didn't have a honeymoon either, DH had to be back at work

I still have my dress in a cupboard ,my shoes were of their time ,platform white patent strappy shoes with an ankle strap .I wore a blue trouser suit to go away in with a semi sheer printed blouse in a matching tone and navy strappy shoes .We didn't go far,neither finances nor work commitments would allow and we only had a cuple of days in the highlands ...oh and we had to be back for a court case ,we'd had a lot of wedding gifts stolen from our car 6 weeks before the big day.We came back for that case...the accused never turned up .

I remember it all including the silver strappy sandals.
We didn't have a honeymoon as had spent out on our first house but I did change into a brown and cream outfit with brown wedge sandals after the meal.

I remember every detail of my wedding outfit and shoes and the going away outfit was a teal two piece suit with a red fox fur collar and brown suede shoes.
DH clearly remembered the day as well because he had a locket and chain made for our Golden anniversary, the same as the one I wore on our wedding day.

Mine were satin which was fashionable in those days, just going to have a look to see if they showed at all!

Corner, you're a genius. I rooted out the wedding photo album, and there they are. Well, just the toes peeping out, but enough to see that they were strappy, and as it was a boiling day in September, just as well. If anything I thought they would be like my matron of honour, pointy toed, but no.

But, what a time waster it is, looking at old photos. We are supposed to be going out, so I'd better get a wiggle on now.
