To be honest I've picked up a bad habit

I seem to be saying' to be honest' before very ordinary statements and as I am honest why am I saying this. I am working to eradicate this. Anyone else noticed an annoying habit/cliché in themselves that needs weaning

Probably not Wilma but hey, join the club (as “they” also say) ?

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 04-Dec-17 22:34:43

Incredible!
I once heard a politician on the radio claiming that their party had some "incredible policies".
I would have been more impressed if their policies had been credible.

Aepgirl Mon 04-Dec-17 18:29:17

It's clearly.........

BBbevan Mon 04-Dec-17 17:03:28

I never implied it was a bad habit. Jalima Just that everyone in S Wales especially says it. And if Teetime had been there, that is where she may have picked up ' to be honest with you ' . ?

All conversations prefaced by 'D'you know what?' - I suppose a variant of 'Guess what?' and an attention-seeking ploy. I don't think I've been guilty of this one!

So, like it's when I say bless when, you know, I'm an aetheist.

MissAdventure Mon 04-Dec-17 16:26:55

I think I say "i'll see you later" even though I know I won't. I don't know why I say it!

Tiggersuki Mon 04-Dec-17 16:24:44

I don't say it unless it's true but I hate it when people in shops say see you later when you leave....there have been times when I expect half a dozen such folks to turn up later! It is meaningless.

Jalima1108 Mon 04-Dec-17 16:11:44

Actually BBevan, it's not a bad habit it's quite funny if not overdone!

Purpledaffodil Mon 04-Dec-17 16:08:14

Friend of DH tacks “As it were” on to most sentences. Very irritating as it were. ?

Jalima1108 Mon 04-Dec-17 16:05:33

Jalima1108 What is disgusting?

It's another saying from Gavin and Stacy BBevan!

'That's disgusting that is'
which I have heard people use jokingly (best said by younger friends in an authentic Welsh accent)

lesley4357 Mon 04-Dec-17 16:02:58

Yes! Friends of mine start virtually every sentence with "to be honest with you..." I always feel like saying "Do you usually lie to me then?"

Lupin Mon 04-Dec-17 15:45:22

Politicians who use the phrase "Let me say this..."
Property show clichés - Light and airy. We want to keep alpacas. A big dine-in kitchen with an island. ( It's envy with the latter )
Property show euphamisms - Cosy for too small. Potential - for someone else.
As for me - Not to worry - when clearly I should.

If I have any minor news or gossip to impart to OH I find myself starting the tale with "Guess what?"
How I would hate to hang around waiting for him to guess.
Not that he would!

I address everybody as love, Yorkshire upbringing, I know it annoys some people but at 62 I doubt I'll change.

Not to bad living in Devon as they do tend to address women as "my Lover" no I'm not or "my Lovely" which I like, used in Somerset a lot as well.

Direne3 Mon 04-Dec-17 14:18:52

I find myself saying 'Bye love' at the end of family phone conversations - hate it, it's 'so not me' (that's another one). Has anyone else got in the habit of counting how many times the weather forecaster on BBC says 'but'?

adaunas Mon 04-Dec-17 13:54:24

Mine was "I have to say", even when I certainly didn't have to say anything. It took me ages to stop that. I'm now working on "so".
