I saw in the newspaper that Megan Markel's dress cost £56,000. To me, this an obscene amount to spend on a dress and very poor public relations when there are so many homeless, and thousands struggling to make ends meet on inadequate pay. Surely Kate has got the right idea when she buys "normal" clothes and looks lovely in them.
The photos made me feel sick and so does she! Completely nauseating! And this only the start!
My daughter's immediate reaction was that these red carpet dresses are seldom paid for by the person concerned; the amount of positive advertising generated by having a famous person wearing their brand makes it worth the designer's while to give it away.
Some of you said you "have a feeling about her". I too have a feeling. He is smitten and I have images in my mind of her with a fishing rod and him on the end of the hook. Too trusting and caring like Diana. Especially after reading articles about her saying he has been her life goal.
So how much did Prince Harry's clothes cost, then?
Is it because MM’s American, not ‘home grown’ ?
ctussaud, I agree as my mother used to say "if you can't say anything nice, say nothing. Seems an awful lot of bile and jealousy with a lot of Gransnetters. As usual, left wing bias, no one else allowed to give their opinion if it differs from theirs.
I wonder if MM had been British there would have been such spite directed towards her from some posters on this thread.
Agree with your sentiments. Chewbacca
Being an actress and not perhaps fully understanding the publics expectations (if any) of the Royal family I guess she thought she had better dress up for the occasion. Whereas someone like Katherine would naturally think dress or suit she is used to the red carpet and thought bling. I am sure time will take care of that! Having seen an exhibition of the Queen's dresses down the years this dress had nothing on them. However much they have talked about her new acting role I still wonder if she has a clue what she is in for.
Wonder where her 'afro' hairstyle from younger photos has gone!?

I am with you on this and not looking at Prince Harry's engagement through rose tinted spectacles .Meghan Markle is no shrinking violet. As an actor she gives performances which are always open to criticism.Water off a ducks back. She is now on the worlds stage and act one of a performance to beat all performances. Her feet are well under the Buckingham Palace table.Harry is besotted and has inherited his mothers vulnerability so no guessing who will be wearing the trousers.
There has been enough tragedy and scandal in the House of Windsor over the past thirty years. It is natural her majesty wants to see Harry happy. Lets hope for her sake she will not be let down.
Chewbacca I agree. She worked for the money. She was just lucky that it was an overpaid profession but she did start by taking a low paid job on an independent film. She doesn't come across as a snob. She has always done a lot for charity and has now given up her career as an actress and will do more for charity. She has proved that she is genuine about it by her work so far.
I am not a fan of royalty but Harry can't be blamed for being born into it. He seems the best of them and I don't think comparisons with the unlikeable Andrew are fair.
If it was the Daily Mail - you certainly should'nt believe anything it says - from personal experience an article about my daughter was untrue/ exaggerated and almost slanderous .an
‘The Emporer’s New Clothes’ sprang to mind. Hmm - not sure where the price of the dress quote came from? Hopefully not the Daily Mail?! Whatever, she has her own money, is intelligent, hardworking, so have no real issue she wants get rid of her hard-earned cash to a greedy clothes shop. Personally, I would rather gouge my eyes than spend a 100th of that amount on an item of clothing!
Leave the girl alone. It's her money she can spend it how she likes. Have none of us spent more than we should on something. Obviously not to that extent but that's relative to what you have. I think it's great to see a young couple in love.
Some of you sound like a lot of moaners - how do we know if any of the information about the cost of the dress is true. Some of you probably spend more than me on clothes but i certainly wouldn't dream of criticising you - let us by our words try and bring peace not condemnation.
As others have said, unfortunately, GabriellaG the dress WAS bought not loaned - so said "a spokesperson for Kensington Palace".
Maybe they could auction it off and give the cash to charity. That would perhaps heal some of the hurt/damage.
I think my Grans were correct in their saying 'If you cannot say anything nice, do not say anything at all' . Designers loan dresses to women who have the opportunity to showcase them. Sounds rather a lot of vitriol directed towards a young woman, shouldn't we be welcoming her to our Country.
The dress was LOANED to her for the engagement photos. Just like celebs appearing at red carpet events who wear really expensive outfits and jewellery, those things are written up in the press and give the designer valuable publicity which they would otherwise have to pay for.
Many of the clothes you might see Kate or Meghan wearing are loss leaders, either sold to them at a massive discount or given to them, knowing that the public will want copies and the items will sell out. Mary Berry's jumpers and jackets used to sell out as soon as she was seen on the GBBO. It's a sales ploy. I'm surprised that sense didn't tell you that Meghan was just giving the designer some publicity, as with the coats and dresses worn by her and Kate and published (with prices) in the MailOnline.
I totally agree with you DAy 6 , I have a feeling about her and can’t shake it off. I feel a bit maternal towards Harry - bl***dy stupid I know but I fear for him . And now the media compare her to Kate - give me Kate any day
Oh meow, ladies!
If she hadn't have worn the dress the money wouldn't have been given to charity so I fail to understand what the gripe is about. Good luck to the pair of them, I think they are fab. Some of us have it, some if us don't but what a waste of time it is being bitter!!!
Merry Christmas!
its not inspired by love of the poor but by hate of the rich
That sentiment shouts out loud and clear from some posters on GN.
Thank you Chewbacca, we all need to look at our own spending before criticising others.
Excellent idea Annie. I think that those decrying her for the cost of her dress should prove their own charitable largesse by giving up every non essential item and donate the the costs to charity.
Baggs agreed. The vein of spite and vitriol running through this, and some other threads, is exactly hatred and envy of the rich. Love of the poor comes nowhere near.
I think that it is quite thoughtless to almost show off your wealth in this way. There are so many homeless people and people at their wits end having to use foodbanks etc. I think it is in bad taste to flaunt it.
I'll give it five years.....
