Re irritation at having what one's just said cleverly repeated by someone else, I think some posters are more easily annoyed than others.

To janea. That’s often happened to me too. And the later posts which echo mine are then subsequently agreed with as oh, great post, so-and-so. That’s what it feels like to be invisible.
But getting back to the OP I completely agree Baggs. I know people often do say they haven’t read it all but an acronym would be useful. Wonder what it would take to agree on one?

I agree Janeainsworth it isn’t always necessary to read the whole thread but if it’s complicated or there’s an update it’s very irritating to find people still giving the same advice
Eg ‘My husband has a bad chest should I take him to the doc’ then a whole list of helpful suggestions come up then the Original poster comes back ‘I took your advice and took him to the doctor and he’s got pneumonia’ then you get post after post saying ‘ oh I think you ought to take him to the doctor’ etc etc ‘he might have’blah blah blah

All the OP's posts, that is, not just the first one as we get.

Mumsnet has a yet another handy feature that we don't. The OP's posts are highlighted in green, making it easy to at least see if they have given more info, or have answered a point you might have been going to make.

On Mumsnet, people will say haven't RTFT (read the full thread). Or sometimes CBA to RTFT

IHNRTWT but I find it REALLY REALLY annoying when I make a point, only to have it repeated two posts below by a poster who clearly HNRTWT and seems to think they are making an original point.

Wasn't there a plan once to highlight posts by the OP in a thread? Our own posts we each see as pink, posts from HQ are green. If we could at least just see what the OP has written since at a glance (highlighted in yellow or blue or something), we could skip all the other stuff in between if we want.

As Meg says, most other posts following on from the OP are others chiming in with their "that-happened-to-me-too" stories. I am just as guilty of this as others!

Often such posts are interesting and helpful, and provide a new slant on the problem but it's up to us if we read them or not.

Will this be an official acronym, or just one agreed by posters? If it's the latter I can't see much chance of an agreement being reached by the posters on GN judging by other threads on here. We could have CARE- (Can't be Arsed to Read Everything)

Yes some of them are so lengthy it's time consuming to go through the lot, although I can see that crucial points could be missed and the poster might well add something that has already been thoroughly picked over up thread. Nevertheless I don't think anyone should be castigated for not reading every post.

CBATRWT? Possibilities are endless, we would all have to be on the same song sheet. Cannot see that ever happening. Vive la difference and all that.

I agree Baggs - not necessary to read the whole thread, of course, you can if you feel that way inclined.

I agree with all the above and that there should be a thingy as baggs suggests. One a little more wieldy might be better.

And there ARE cases of additional information putting a very different slant on OP which often makes me wonder...
I think we are perfectly entitled to give our tuppenceworth without necessarily wading through pages and pages of opinion and advice unless we want to.

I'm on the fence a bit because often additional information comes out if the thread is long so if you only read the OPs first post you might miss that and it could impact how you might like to respond.

Having said that I doubt I would read the whole of a 15 page thread - life's a bit short for that

I agree Baggs - replies are to the OP. It’s not necessary to read what people have written about themselves, and if you are repeating what another has said, that’s not a problem, just goes to show a consensus.
