You are not a silly old bat Galen giving up your independence is a big deal but it does make economic sense, unless you had been willing to put Gary in a uniform and peaked cap -now there’s a thought. Is it too late?
Every action of this ilk can seem irrevocable and another step down the slope to decrepitude. Younger people just don’t see it that way. The only thing to do is make sure you stay as independent as ever, enjoy a contract with a reliable taxi firm and cock a snook at the poor so and so’s washing their old bangers on the drive on a Sunday morning.

Feeling down as I’ve said goodbye to my car and i feel I’ve lost my independence and feeling very old.
Also can’t find anyone who wants to come on the Xmas cruise with me which means I loose my couple of thousand pounds deposit as I have doubts about managing on my own and will have to cancel
I’m surprised how much the giving up of my car is affecting me as i was driving less than 600 miles year! It wasn’t worth keeping.

Hello! I`ve not been around for a while, and really cannot face reading back over so many pages, so do forgive me for not being up to date on everybody. My absence was due to a combination of a weekend in London with my daughter, getting my bedroom redecorated and refurnished, mostly by my great family, plus not being very well, cough, cold, generally lurgy-ish and feeling rotten.
The weekend before last, my daughter took me to London, where she`d booked us into our first ever 5* hotel. We were going to the Strictly Tour at the O2 Arena, and we stayed at the Intercontinental, right next door to the O2. It was marvellous, as was the show, but the hotel restaurant`s prices were a shock. We ordered the cheapest thing on the menu, which was a beefburger with cheese, NOT a cheeseburger. She had thick cut chips and I had fries. The bill was £41, with service charge, just under £47! They did give us free hot crusty bread and glasses of water though. Later on, when arriving back at the hotel, we discovered that the Strictly lot were staying there as well, and in the rooftop bar we were only 2 tables away from Craig Revel Horwood. As we left, Alias, Jeanette, Joe McFadden and a few others were just arriving. That hotel was a lovely experience, but the prices weren`t!

Thanks for updating us all ann, maw’s understanding is far greater than mine but I can say that our friend was in hospital for three further weeks after being medically ready for discharge. There was no pressure for her to return home until her support package was in place. I recall several assessments. It’s importent that you have enough energy to care for your husband, your needs should be considered too, I hope all the help you need and deserve is available to you.

ann we are all aware that H thinks that you can manage fine on your own- you cannot and the care package must be in place and you must feel able to take the responsibility of H being discharged home.

I agree, you must take all that is on offer.

“Medically ready for discharge” is not the same as saying ready for “discharge to home “ just that a consultant can say he has dealt with what the patient initially came into hospital for.
You do not need to agree to “Discharge to home” unless OT and Physio agree. Once home of course the care passes to SS and we had carers arriving the next morning and a full assessment and 6 week care package set up. Are you being offered a “Reablement” package? (Called RAHT and RAIT) in our area.
I am sure you will take advantage of anything on offer Ann, I hope your local DN service is also on board.

Funerals bring up all sorts kitty, it’s hard to know in advance. I’m pleased you feel better now. I think your Mum’s anniversary is soonish, or have I got that wrong?

Ive also had ann and her husband in my thoughts today, I hope they have had some support.

Beautiful flowers soop, another one here who wouldn’t have consigned those chocolates to the loft for safekeeping. No hope for me. Good friends never worry how we look, in fact your friends probably didn’t notice.

You’ve had a busy time n&g, super t-shirts and a row of beautiful children. Your photos shoot sounds to have gone well, how long until you get the outcome?

Ann the most helpful advice I was given as my mums carer was to consider myself the care coordinator. Ensuring she got the right help, etc, by those equipped to do it. Of course, in real life it didn't often work out like that, but it was quite good to see my role as overseer, rather than Jack of all trades.

Just to say I am ok, H is improving slowly, I have seen both the OT and Physio today after insisting they come to speak to me.
Equipment for home all being delivered on Thursday morning, stumbling block is SS who take some time to get the care package in place.
H is medically ready for discharge but everything must be in place first.
He is very cantankerous and demanding, but tough, I am putting myself first for once.
The situation for geriatric patients is dire. I had no idea, some have no-one and have no visitors, it is very upsetting.
I can't wait to get him out of there but am not letting my heart rule my head. I am very tired just visiting, the hard part is to come I fear.

I was just being morose - people have far worse things going on and, as you implied Maw, mum was not particularly lovable. I'm over it now.

Oh dear kittylester. I wish I could think of something comforting or clever to say, but that makes me sad too.
Your mum was not a happy woman it seems and all we can draw from that is a lesson for our own lives.

I'm a bit down. At my sister in law's, mum's funeral the tears flowed freely as they remembered the deceased. What made me sad was that they will miss her so much and at mum's funeral barely a tear was shed. My neice, who was granddaughter to both of them, was really upset today. I felt sad that mum wasn't thought of in that way.

Hey ho, to coin a phrase, off to have , on my own as DH is at football.

Unexpected visitors arrived mid afternoon and have just this minute departed. I'm looking a right scruff and the lady looked as if she'd stepped out of the Vogue magazine. Ironing in heaps to be put away. Paintbrushes and such scattered willy nilly. MacSporran in torn gardening jeans. Hey ho! As Baggs would say. I may be doing my friend's ironing in the morning. If so, I'll catch up later.

We didn't take our pal to visit her husband in the care home. She's to take all the time she needs to allow her wound to heal. Late yesterday afternoon a man delivered a gorgeous bouquet and a whopping box of Thornton's chocs. A thank you gift. I was delighted. We had to sample the chocs. In fact, we had four each and I pedalled away for an extra ten minutes on the exercise bike as penance . We've had two each today. MacSporran took the box into the loft, out of temptation's way. As much as I love chocolate I'm far too unsteady to climb into the loft. They will come out of hiding again tomorrow.

I love that idea Morethan - our current word game is replacing the first letter of an animals name with a D . It came about because we saw a lot of pheasants ( and desants - which is what they call the squashed ones!!) So obviously foxes and Doxes, etc .... I particularly like the hope of Cooper to see a Delephant at the side of the road !!

I hope you are better by tomorrow, morethan because your virus could easily pass to your DiL who sounds vulnerable; and the hospital wouldn't thank you for spreading the virus.

But I want to be better by tommorow maw I’m on hospital run with DiL then. I’ve had a hot bath and back in bed. My sister tells me not to take anything but paracetamol because the flu remedies stuff just pushes the virus into your sinuses or on your chest or in my case makes my asthma worse! I’m not sure if that true. Any advice? Lovely jumpers n&g my grandchildren and I play lots of word games in the car. We mostly use ‘I know an old lady who swallowed fly ‘and we’ll replace fly with something like a “tortoise, she did it on purpose’ it’s great fun.

I'm working on new ones now... as we were driving past a pig farm last week with the 3 boys they started discussing what they would name their pet pig( if they had one !) ..the two big boys came up with Rasher or bacon or Sausage ....there was a long silence when we asked the little one . Eventually he decided if he had a pig it would be called .....Cheesey !!

I rest my case LOL
