This is what I sort of believe, but it will be a bit daft sounding to most people. I have thought this since coming across Philip Pullman's Dark Matters trilogy and watching film The Golden Compass . Bear with me as it gets a bit deep.
In Physics basically everything in the universe is made up of particles, but particle is a general term for something that varies massively to form the world around us and beyond. Humans are made from particles and are sentient beings, and particles make this possible. Our consciousness exists because of the relationship between particles.
So my thoughts are that when we die, no matter what happens to our bodies, whether we're cremated or buried in the ground or at sea, etc., our particles are broken down and separate. I think it's possible that particles from our existence can be sensed by some people and those particles retain something of the whole being. This could also be described as a soul, spiritual and/or religious.
I know this is a subject discussed by philosophers for thousands of years, but I think science is answering some of the questions and will continue to do so.
