I've read that it could be a corruption of "God's". It says in Jalima's link that the Germans call it Karfreitag, kar being an old German word for sorrow. That's just brought back a long lost memory to me of my mother serving up carlins (a sort of black pea, cooked with vinegar) during Lent. I'd completely forgotten about that. I wonder if the name comes from the same source?
