Keeping the duvet fresh

Our winter duvet is dry cleaned, put away (attic) till the summer one is sent to be cleaned and replaces the winter one in the attic.
I started this after I retired and had “spare time”

If you have a big enough washing machine you might be able to wash it in there.

The last time I hung a king size duvet out to air, the blasted line snapped.

These domestic goddess threads make me want to hide under my duvet!

Always aired the duvets out of the window when in France. May do it again in our new home, when we finally move in ... altho’ the weather may make me consider alternative ideas.
Washing line will do the business - or indoors on the upstairs banister on damp days perhaps..

Must be duvet week. I had my big winter duvet over the rotary line like an umbrella on tuesday. Was a bit of a struggle on my own but got it there in the end. Its now sweet smelling and packed away in one of those squishy bags until winter returns; hopefully not until at least October

Snap, that's exactly what I've done today. We will be having visitors soon, so I was checking the spare room. The duvet is clean but didn't smell really fresh. Several hours on the rotary line in the sunshine, and it smells lovely.

Although I have a tumble dryer, nothing beats a bit of outdoor drying if possible.

Our duvet is super king size - I can't imagine hanging it out of the window! From what I remember of holidays in Austria, they didn't provide big duvets anyway - double beds had two single duvets - which at least meant that your other half couldn't pull your half off you in the night.

I don't have a washing line but pegging it out in the sun would seem a good idea if you can.
However our bed does get opened up/aired for a few hours every day - often all morning or more - and all the duvets go to the laundry once a year. We have all-seasons duvets for all the beds - a medium and a light one buttoned together for the coldest months, so neither is on the bed all year round anyway.

I got into the habit of airing our duvet from the window when we lived in Germany. It took me a few years back home to start to feel self-conscious about it. ? The downside is that you have to keep your window bottom very clean. I can’t remember the last time I did it!

Thank you for your comments. I've washed the mattress and pillow protectors today too. Perfect drying day so hoping for a good sleep tonight.

My DH has spent much time in Germany and he too has remarked how their custom was to air and freshen their duvets through open bedroom windows.
It seems perfectly sensible and a good way to refeshen them completely..........the clothesline too seems equally acceptable to me.

When I first went on holiday to Austria, I saw duvets hanging out of bedroom windows all over the place. This was long before we adopted them as bedding in this country. Airing them outside now and then seems like a good idea to me.
