Royal Oak Day celebrated the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. King Charles actually returned to England on the 8th May, but the 29th May was chosen for the celebration as this was King Charles II birthday.

Pic of decorated tree in Aston-it’s a poplar apparently. It’s been decorated since 1660 when Charles 11 returned to the throne but a local 18c squire’s wedding celebrations are also involved. His bride was so delighted when she saw the tree that she paid for the decorations every year. A parade of local children celebrate this with a small bride and groom heading the walk.

Dad told us it commemorates Charles 2 hiding in the branches of the oak.

My grandfather lived in Aston on Clun, my father always talked about oak apple day. Apparently it celebrates the restoration of the monarchy 1660.

My Mum used to speak of it, she was a Hampshire girl.

Certainly in Worcester. I lived there until about 5 years ago and there were celebrations at the Guildhall (for those with the right kit.) The King was there and I danced with Samuel Pepys :-)

Aston on Clun (nr Craven Arms, Shropshire) has an Arbor Day at end of May when the oak tree is decorated. It’s connected to Oak Apple Day but not sure how. My nephews lived nearby and were involved in the ceremony through school.
