Metalwork removal from ankle

Thank you so much everyone for your support and advice. I’m new to gransnet, that was my first post, blown away that I got so many answers. I went back to hospital to have my bloods done again, just waiting now for a date. Have decided I’ll have some earrings made from the plates, too much? Maybe just a key ring.

Don't fear an epidural. They give you a sedative as well. The anaesthetist called it a liquid gin and tonic. You just drift off and come to later feeling like you've had a lovely sleep.

I had a # dislocation in 2009 and my ankle was pinned and plated. I would love to have the metal work removed but I was told at the time that it could not be done because putting the bones back together was like doing a jigsaw puzzle.

It does sound as though your surgery does need to be done. When you go for admission find out who is doing the surgery and tell him of any concerns you may have. The anaesthetist should chat with you to find out what you have had before and what the reaction was.

Try to find out if you will be discharged using crutches- whether you will be fully weight bearing because that impacts on your life. Will you be a day case? If you live on your own you should really have somebody staying at home with you for 24 hours. Good luck. PM me if you wish.

Oh you poor thing!

I had metalwork removed from my elbow after a stupid physio gave me some sort of infra-red treatment which you were not supposed to do if metalwork present! The metal heated up and burned through my skin - 'nuff said!!!! The metalwork was intended to stay there.

I had the accident away from my local hospital, but subsequent follow-up and removal of metal took place locally.

I had metal work removed from my leg after I broke it and it had to be pinned. It was just a screw that was removed - it was poking out of my knee and it felt like I was kneeling on Lego everytime I kneeled down!

I had a GA because an epidural meant I'd have to remain in hospital for longer until I regained feeling in my legs, which could take some hours.

The worst bit was waiting for hours beforehand without any breakfast!
