I'm convinced the heat is playing havoc with out keyboards MissA. Every post I've put on GN today has managed to be gobbledygook by the time I hit "post" and see it past the point of no return!
For wasps, when you've finished a jar of jam or marmalade do not wash it out, fill it about half full with water, put lid back on and make holes in the lid. Put it in the garden, it will soon fill up with drowned wasps!
We are in the country and there can often be a lot of flies, and later in the year …. big spiders eeekk!
As I've said before here, we had roller blind fly screens fitted and they are wonderful, best money we've spent. We also have a chain hanging across the always open back door. The odd determined wasp still gets in, but it works well.
I so agree about flies. Grampy has a battery powered electric tennis racket that dries them on contact! Very satisfying .!
I was on the phone to my brother yesterday , he was doing a bat survey ( as you do ) and he spotted a wasps nest underground. He called out for someone to bring a bucket of dirt over to seal it and was promptly stung 10 times for his trouble !! Needless to say he wasnt happy!
I hate flies with a vengeance, particularly when they keep buzzing passed you, as though they're deliberately trying to annoy you! Last night I sat with a rolled up magazine and swatted 7, one after the other. It's a mission to get as many as I can in one go! Wasps will be next, and those are even worse. ?
At one point we had 27 bluebottles flying around our sitting room after the windows were opened for the first time this summer. I couldn't think what to do. DH just got the Henry hoover out and sucked them up! Result. Word must be out as weveynot had any more.
My man is on their footpath with a rolled up newspaper .......if they refuse to escape the way they entered he is relentless! He is the main cook and bottlewasher and will not tolerate just one in "his kitchen"........living more or less next door to a farm we know where they come from!! hence the need to get them gone..........so you have my sympathies, they are a menace and make life so uncomfortable. The wasps have not yet started.....
Craftycat, I so agree! They are driving us crazy and nothing seems to get rid of them. We are having building work done, so they are getting in as all the doors and windows are open.
I love this weather- I really do. I am very happy to wear very little 24/7 & read all afternoon on a sunbed in the garden. The only draw back are the flaming flies! I have never seen as many as this year. As soon as I start to do anything in the kitchen they are all over the place. I can't work with windows & doors shut as it faces South & gets very hot. Plus the wasps are joining in now but they are only a problem at the end of the summer. I have spent a fortune on fly spray this year. We got back from 2 weeks on a Greek island 2 weeks ago & it has just occurred to me that we never saw a fly out there at all. Not in the appartment or in bars or Tavernas- not one. How come we are overrun with them & a country where it is far hotter for far longer doesn't suffer from them. What are they doing right that we are doing wrong?
