The sixties

Linamillion. I remember watching the devastation of Aberfan. We were living in Scotland. Aberfan and Moors murders were the two events i remember deeply upsetting my mother. I think we were more badly affected in those days because we rarely heard tragic reports. Whereas now there is something on almost every news report.

I loved the sixties, living in Liverpool it was fabulous.
I started Nursing 1960 and had some of the best times of my life, times I will never forget, I was lucky during the swinging sixties.

Yes the 60's were amazing. I was 16 when they began so was up to the minute in all the music, clothes, makeup etc. I used to listen to Radio Luxembourg every night, try to turn my curly hair into the latest Sassoon styles by ironing it, wore blue eyeshadow and white lipstick. I loved the winkle pickers and mini skirts. I couldn't afford Mary Quant clothes but made my own copies. I also could take advantage of the Pill although I was anything but promiscuous.
There were tragedies but there are in all decades and they don't define it.

Oh Anniebach, you're making me chuckle today. lol I was born in 1954 and remember Aberfan disaster being on the t.v and the assassination of President Kennedy. My best friend and I each made a paisley hipster mini skirt in needlework class at school. We teamed our skirt up with a ruffled front white blouse and a 'cow bell' long thin leather necklace round our necks and thought we were the bees knees. I remember the Flower Power songs on the radio, 'Are you going to San Fransico' Scott Mackenzie? Mama Cass. My happiest years were the 70's. Wish I could go back and live those years again.

I loved the sixties for its feeling of freedom. I lived and worked in London at 18 and loved it, the music, the fashion, ban the bomb demos and the pure feeling of life. Went abroad as an au pair and my social life was with the young Americans who living in the area to keep out of the Vietnam war. Loved it.

Well I loved the 60s.
Biba, Carnaby St., The Stones ( never liked Beatles-too comercial) great clothes, great clubs & parties, cheap flights to continent.
We just had so much fun. I don't remember much about politics then but I did go to protest at Vietnam War at US embassy in 1967 or was it 1968.
We had a great time.
Then I got married in 1970 aged 20 & life took over.

I enjoyed the 60's.

I was at university in the mid sixties and mostly remember the change in fashion -from the knee length full skirts (with net petticoats!) in the 50s to the miniskirts in the 60s. Tights replaced stockings (which were not really practical with the short skirts ) and I remember wearing pants both under and over the tights at first as it looked better as you were getting on a bus I thought. Then there was the make up - heavily made up eyes and very pale lipstick; and of course the Beatles! It all seemed so new and exciting. I think the promiscuous society was related to the newly available Pill but I must say it passed me by too (though my children don't believe me.) I married in 1969 but although we went away together before we were married it was always in single rooms. Anything else was unthinkable (to me anyway -I think DH did have other ideas!)
I do remember the assassinations too , and the first moon landing which was a few weeks before our wedding.

And yes, Radio Luxembourg. I can still remember some of the jingles/ads:

LFC, many of whom lived in the vicinity of Northway, Maghull.
I used to party with plenty of them from LFC, EFC and MC plus Leeds FC lads.
We had our own little 'jet set'. Bobby's coffee bar was a meeting place with a 6p jukebox, ice skating at Prescot ice rink, 10 pin bowling, dancing at the Locarno, Saturday mornings at the hairdressers then coffee at the Kardomah with friends or Wings Club in Bold St, then clothes shopping before the big night out in town. Many club visits from one to another. An amazing era. I remember it all even the grey and salmon-pink Ford Zephyr and white Mustang 2+2 fastback owned by David Gerrard (who took photos of me wearing nothing but his denim shirt perched on his dad's office chair)
Used to play cards with local police when they were on duty in the rain.
House share with 2 others, we'd give them tea and toast while their capes were drying and they'd lose their wages playing poker.

Aniebach I did the Aldermaston march. Just the once though. Very wet and cold if I remember.

I remember having a red and white mackintosh and hat Courreges copy a la C&A in the mid sixties and thinking I was so fashionable - I probably looked really daft walking round a home counties market town.

I was in Hong Kong until 1963 and so surprised at the change in the popular music scene when I returned to the UK.

I may have been only 15 when the 60's ended but I remember a happy childhood. I was an only child but what you don't have you don't miss, made my own company. In the summer holiday I rode my bike when it was fine, took sandwiches and went off for the day up the mountains above my home on the Neath valley with the other children from the hamlet where I lived. Rainy days were spent reading Enid Blyton' s The Famous Five, Malory Towers and Secret Seven, or with colouring books. My first boyfriend when I was 16, let me drive his mini on very quiet road for a few hundred yards! My parents were older than my friends' parents but my mother loved The Stones, Tom Jones and Adam Faith. Loved him with Zoe Wanamaker years later in that series - mainly filmed in Israel - what was it called?

Linamillion. They were in a series called Love Hurts, but it was shown in the 1990s. I don't remember it. Vaguely remember watching Adam Faith in Budgie. Still love to watch the old western series from 60s. Bonanza, Rawhide and just recently The Virginian. I was in love with the Virginian.

What wonderful posts, keep them coming. Lots of memories about the 60's. Unique music, clothes, hair and makeup. My mum was really into it as well. She "got with it" and had some great clothes (nothing over the top) and she loved the Beatles as well. We would dance around the house us kids with our mum, we all loved them. We even had black plastic wigs to put on our heads. Everyone loved a different Beatle, I loved Paul. Thought he was gorgeous! Happy Happy Days. I loved Jimi Hendrix as well, his clothes were far out! Anyone remember "Woodstock?"

I have fond memories of those times although a lot of the political stuff passed me by but I do remember JFK, the moon landings, the Moors murders and Aberfan - I was at the local fair when we heard about that - the first real disaster I remember well.

In '63 aged 9 we moved from my home town up north to the seaside in Yorkshire and a whole new life began. Fishing with toy lines off the harbour wall (never caught anything), playing on the beach and getting changed in tall striped tents, donkey rides and the rock factory in town, the local coffee shop which used glass cups - even though I wasn't keen on coffee back then we thought we were so sophisticated, starting secondary school in a grey mac and school hat which I hated and soon started rolling the top of my skirt over to be like the older girls. I never had much confidence but had so much fun with the little group I went around with.

Trying to straighten my (then) curly hair and using sellotape to plaster the sides flat when it was wet. At 15 going to see bands like Free, the Move, Amen Corner in brightly coloured mini skirts, buying my best ever coat in herringbone with a huge fur collar and finally going out with the bad boy of the class in '69 who I'd once worshipped at 13 and falling madly in love. Leaving school the following year and going to college only to fall pregnant 3 months later at 16. A huge scandal to my poor parents especially my mother who had been illegitimate. Married a month later at just 17 and all the ups and downs of the following years as parents in the early '70s.

It was the time of the fun of our childhood, the explorations of our youth and the realisation of our responsibilities rolled into a decade.

Before I had left school in 63, the music scene was starting to take place , listening to Radio Luxembourg on my trannie, and when I started work having on the bus to work and listening to the pirates.

I have great memories of the 60's, not least because the optimism of that decade coincided with being in my teens, when anything seems possible.
The murders of men who represented hope, who wanted to end racism reflects the continued fear in some places about the loss of their power over others. What's happening in the USA today is a polar opposite of what the Kennedy's and Dr King stood for.
The Vietnam war was a dreadful waste of life. It ought to have ensured the US avoided sending their young men out to murder people in lands far from their own.
I gathered with a group of friends aged 16 to watch a tv programme about Bob Dylan - we sat spellbound and began the process of becoming hippy peace protesters instantly. We grew our hair, gave up makeup and hoped to change the world. I suppose we have in some ways but we totally failed where stopping the war is concerned.
I loved the clothes, the music, the sense of anything being possible. I married, foolishly and badly, in 1968. It wasn't all dreadful and one positive was I found the women's movement in the 70's - that was a great decade for me. Great clothes, fabulous music and the beginning of adult life as an independent woman (with children)
Oh yes, the Pirate radio stations - fantastic

I went to see HAIR at Shaftesbury Theatre in 68 just after it opened paid 10/- in the gods.
For a musical it changed things away from older trends , cast wise wish I still had the programme , but you had Paul Nicholson, Marsha Hunt , Elaine Paige in the cast .

ah MooMoo...I was a mod too, my first ever boyfriend, Peter, had a beautiful Lambretta scooter with a Union Jack seat and so many mirrors that it was a work of art! I spent many a devoted hour sitting in his parents garage on a weekend, listening to groups like The Marmalade sing "Ooblah di ooblah da life goes on, wooooaaa..."watching him fiddling with manifolds and bushes, lovingly polishing the chrome on the scooter...wondering whether he loved me or the scooter best!! On reflection, I think it was the scooter! He subsequently went on a life changing trip overland to India, in a VW camper, with several friends, leaving me and the Lambretta to miss him. I slept with his crash helmet in bed with me for the whole six months he was away!! Of course, when he returned, he had changed beyond recognition and I was yesterdays news. My heart was broken for at least a fortnight . Often wonder what became of my first love...heard some years later that he'd married a girl whom he had professed to dislike on the school bus...oh the perfidy!!

Callgirl1 that photo could have been of me and my friends in the late 50s /early 60s. Then it all changed and by the late 60s/early 70s it was all miniskirts!! And then maxis/flower power/ hippy fashions in the 70s

Lurid green eyeshadow! My friend had a block mascara that I am sure she used to spit on. Now that can't be right???
