Hairstyles for the over 50s

I was just looking at the Gransnet advice on hairstyles - my face shape is not mentioned, so what styles are recommended for pug ugly (apart from a chin length fringe)?

grin hooty it can’t be that bad?
What face shape are you really?

Hootygrin

Do you have lovely big eyes?

I am sure you are very wise.

Face shape is definitely more important than age, when I go to the hairdressers I look online to find a style I like and print it out and take it with me I just say can you cut it like that taking into consideration my hair etc. It's always a picture of a woman in her late twenties / early thirty's. I usually joke and say if you could make me look like her that would be a bonus but hey I don't expect miracles. I have to say she works her magic every time. I ignore anything that says hairstyles for the over 50's and fashion for the over 50's. I wear what I like and have a haircut that suits me.

up until 3 weeks ago my hair was half way down my back and I wore it in what my OH called Chrity Dingle style, loose waves.I loved it but it was getting a bit dry on the ends so I had 4 inches off it,its still below shoulder length and I wear it curly most days and straight on others.I'm almost 65 ,my age and my shoe size are not related to how I wear my hair ..or what clothes I wear.Be confident get something new and exciting done, hair grows so its not forever

Why not ask the advice of your hairdresser? She knows what you look like but we don't.

I think a lot depends on what sort of hair you have. Some people have marvellous hair which can be styled in lots of ways and look great but not everyone's hair is so manageable.

Good luck!

I have a big long, oblong mush, I seem to have developed jowls (where did they come from!), & piggy eyes, (I sound gorgeous don’t I?!). Have you heard the term, resting b*tch face? I have one of them!

I hate hairdressers, I say just a tidy up, half an inch off and I get shorn! Chin length fringe it is then (or has anyone got a paper bag they don’t want?!) grin

Talk about full of yourself! grin

Marydoll Sun 30-Sept-18 20:51:20

Oh Hooty, don't be so hard on yourself. I'm sure you are not ugly. What about getting a mobile hairdresser to come to your own home. That way you would be able to discuss it without any pressure.
I have too developed jowls and when I look in the mirror, I see my mother, aunts and cousins. It must be a family thing. I'm going to buy surgical tape and tape them back behind my ears! grin

Lol you're painting such a lovely picture of yourself here! I'm sure it's nowhere near as bad as you think. There are some apps you can get where you can superimpose hairstyles, colours on to a photo of yourself which might help you make a decision. My hair is quite long but I'm so fed up of it being in the way all the time I have it fastened up mostly. I did have it cut short years ago but that was even more work to keep it looking right!

Happiyogi Sun 30-Sept-18 21:14:00

I'd say definitely change your hairdresser. For several years I had one who I told at every appointment that I'd like to grow my hair a bit longer, but it just needed a light tidy up. My hair remained short and I eventually realised she was never going to let it grow, and that it was her fault and not mine.

My next hairdresser 'got it' immediately and she easily combined light trims with allowing my hair to grow. It felt like magic to me after my previous experience, and I've stayed with her for eight years now!

Don't give up. And think more kindly of yourself - I bet nobody who knows you would describe you as you do yourself!

Stop putting yourself down. It is a very negative trait and is often self fulfilling. Your looks would suddenly improve beyond measure if you were more positive about them. Anyway, they clearly have not stopped you marrying at sometime and having children and grandchildren, whatever your current marital status, so for many people your looks were nothing exceptional and certainly haven't stopped them loving and caring for you.

Look in magazines, newspapers, online until you see a style that is on someone (of any age) with basically the same shaped face and neck length and which you like, cut it out and tell the hairdresser that that is what you want.

Age is irrelevant to how you style your hair. I have just spent 3 days people-watching as I tended a stall at an outside event and I can tell you that there are women of all shapes, shapes, sizes and ages, who never let any of these facts come between them and their choice of hair style, clothing style or anything else and a lot of them looked terrific in outfits and hair colours that, if only described would sound awful.

Oh Hooty Are you having an off day as I'm sure you have attractive traits we all have its just making the best of them.
If you have a long face as you say you have think in terms of a chin length bob or similar, and yes get in a mobile hairdresser in to give you some more ideas.
I have had my hair very long for years now and change from having it piled up with a bulldog clip or pony-tail or a thick plait, twice a year I have 2 inches trimmed off just to keep the ends tidy.

seacliff Mon 01-Oct-18 09:44:33

You sound like me Hooty, I have the jowels and little eyes, a family trait and a fat face, my fault!

Recently I've grown my hair just on shoulder, sides waving under jowels, long feathery fringe. I prefer it, easier to style, just quick blast head upside down, and swishy hair nice than previous helmet hair

Try another hairdresser. Ask for advice, just a little trim could make all the difference. Good luck x

HootyMcowlface ,I understand where you are coming from, I think you are maybe having a bad ‘ mirror ‘ day .
I never like any hairstyle until it’s ready for another cut, what is it with us ladies we are so much harder on ourselves than we ever are to anyone else. You sound like a very lovely person so that makes your hair & your face lovely too.
