Double standards?

I can't see why any organisation needs a Women's Officer, Trans Officer and Men's Officer. An Equalities Officer would do, making sure that everyone is treated fairly. There are plenty of posters on this thread who have shown that they could manage that.

International Women's Day (IWD) is March 8th.

International Men's Day is Nov 19th.

Mind you, that also goes for the word Brexit, and for the word abuse,(meaning verbal, usually) words bandied about all day, every day.

I too thought that the Bristol complaint about the mural just showed up how superficial the complainers education was and to be fair, other members of the Students Union and the administration said so.

However, the idea that WW1 was fought only by white men is a fallacy. Men from all over the world and empire fought in this war. Visit war cemeteries - and town cemeteries in Calais, Boulogne and the official war cemetery at Etaples and you will see Chinese, Egyptians, Africans, African-Americans all buried there. As I remember at the Etaples cemetery there is a special section for those who died who were Muslims.

My grandfather died at Marseilles on the journey home from Salonika in early 1919 (war deaths did not end on 11/11/18). The vast majority of the graves in the beautiful cemetery he is buried in are of Indian troops who either died on the journey to France, or the journey home.

Sparkle Justine Greening is Minister for Women as well as her other functions according to Wiki but PM is also as POGS said but whichever we definitely have one!

I think there has been a growing divide throughout society over recent years and it worries me where it is leading to to be honest.

I think there are factions with strong vouces trying to turn the young against the old and female against male openly throughout society. Certainly there is an openly and often used term used in a derogatory manner the ' Old White Male ' . It apparently is OK to be sexist, ageist and racist all in one go if it applies to the ' Old, White, Male ' and that is not only ' Double Standards ' but also dangerous . Those who use it and those who condone the use of the ' Old White Male' term would no doubt be jumping up and down on the head of a pin if any other ageist, racist , sexist term was being used but ' double standards ' don't worry activists very often.

The problem behind this in my opinion is social media and dare I say it activism such as the '' Me Too ' campaign. It has become a political weapon by politicians who ' bandwagon'
to garner votes but don't realise how they are being ' Sexist , Racist and Ageist ' when they too use the term ' Old, White, Male' .

I think if there is a Minister for Women then why is there not a Minister for Men?

I am married to a white, middle class male and my DS is one likewise and I fear for them in this bitter, biased, vituperatve climate of identity politics.

I am afraid that my DD has succumbed in part to the ‘feminist ideal’ and spouts nonsense about ‘ toxic masculinity’ when, in her life, she has known nothing but kindness and support from the men in her life. It has come from her (supposedly excellent) university and the flames are fanned by her activist friends.

This latest example from Bristol and the iconoclastic young woman from Southampton University are very worrying signs of a nasty culture of man hating.

There was a discussion on the radio in the early hours of the morning a few days ago. A mature woman was saying that men today need help to understand their role and what it means to be masculine in the light of the now non acceptable ways that young men used to use to prove themselves to their mates, while a younger feminist shot her down.

It is very sad - evolution applies to society as well as to physical characteristics - it is useless blaming and exacting a toll from today’s populations for how their ancestors behaved. Equality should be about accepting different qualities as being equally valid ( as long as they are moral) not favouring one minorit over others. The aggressiveness amongst some feminist groups is a purely masculine characteristic which is opposite to the feminine ideals they should be fighting for - tolerance, acceptance of all, and reconciliation.

I would really like to hear something on the news on white heterosexuals and how they are being treated eg college grants. Can't recall any mention of a minority person taken to task for name calling a "whitey".

Sparklefizz Being in Scotland I can add Vikings to the list of slave dealers. They captured then enslaved the those people travelling all over. Not quite the heroic race they are perceived to have been. And those enslaved were white men, women and children.

I think things like this set the attitude of men to women back several years. It is fine that women want to be equal, treated with respect, etc but shouldn't we do the same for men? I can remember someone suggesting the PTA should run an event for Father's Day just like they do Mother's Day but there was an outcry from the women. I looked around the playground after the meeting at collection time and saw a fair few men picking up their kids and being every bit as good as Mum in their role. Surely an expression of thanks wouldn't kill the women!

Nonnie - you mention that we have a Minister for Women .... do we? Who is he/she? That person is keeping a very low profile.

The thing regarding slavery is, it has been ongoing for millennia and slave-owners were not always white, which seems to be overlooked. Marvin Humes, a mixed race pop star/presented recently on "Who Do You Think You Are" was all prepared to find out that his ancestors had been slaves .... and then was shocked to find that his Great Grandfather bought himself out of slavery and then had owned slaves himself! Arabs were trading other Arab slaves until quite recently, historically speaking, the Romans had several races as slaves, etc etc. I get fed up with white males always being painted as the bad guys. As Sodapop says above.

While I'm ranting about unfairness to men I will mention grants. DS is a white heterosexual male who is in a position to apply for certain grants but as soon as he reads the qualifications he gives up as they make it quite clear that no matter how good his application is, it is only going to be given to someone from a 'minority', e.g trans, gay, female, disabled or brown or preferably several of those! A friend who is a non-exec director of a charity suggested he said he was planning to become a woman!

I agree Jalima Seems its ok to disrespect white men now however much they have done for others or their country.
Hard to believe they could be so blinkered about the the Men's Officer or so abusive.
