Drones at Gatwick

It's quite incredible that two illegal drones have closed Gatwick for a second day.

I don't know what's more alarming - that it could be local kids/idiots having fun, or something more malevolent.

What a security lapse!

Worrying times.
I fear there maybe more to come.
I wonder who is behind it all????

Sparklefizz Thu 20-Dec-18 18:54:03

I understand the IT crash at Heathrow was part of a global glitch and has now been sorted.

Could just be a nerd or someone with a psychological disorder of some kind. Wasn’t there a case a couple of years back of someone with Aspergers who hacked into the pentagon?

EllanVannin Thu 20-Dec-18 18:59:31

Give me the old-fashioned way any day Sparklefizz.

Cherrytree59 Thu 20-Dec-18 19:01:02

Sparklefizz thank you for the update
Seems that it may just be a coincidence.

Sparklefizz Thu 20-Dec-18 20:00:33

Cherrytree59 Let's hope it is just coincidence re Heathrow because otherwise it's really quite a scary prospect.

I do think the drones are being organised with malicious intent, though, and much more will come to light. The whole world knows that the UK is in turmoil over Brexit. What better time to stir things even more if you want to create trouble, and give us much more to worry about.

Beau Thu 20-Dec-18 20:20:47

Because of Brexit ? - I've heard it all now. I'm worried it's ISIS because those 2 girls in Morocco were murdered by ISIS, the Danish government has said, and one was decapitated and filmed on the internet, which they say is genuine footage. They hate Christmas and Christians so I am quite concerned.

Watching the news earlier. Saw a bird of prey easily fetch diwn a drone. It seems that in some European countries the have specially trained birds. What a simple but effective idea

Military drones are piloted from hundreds, if not thousands, of miles from the target. That's how the US has bombed targets in Syria, is it not? Who is to say that the perpetrator of this act of sabotage is actually in this country? Or is this notion too far-fetched?

Davidhs Thu 20-Dec-18 21:27:36

My grandson has a drone I was amazed, it was not controlled by a radio it was flown by a smartphone. I guess the one at Gatwick is one of those, hard to get to unless you shut down the mobile system. If it keeps moving its going to be very hard to shoot down and you can't go spraying bullets willy nilly.
Very hard to find a nutter with a mobile phone

Davidhs Thu 20-Dec-18 21:36:29

The person has to be closeby because the batteries have to be changed, the duration is maybe 10 to 20 mins. He might even vanish only to do the same at Heathrow in a couple of weeks, scary.

EllanVannin Thu 20-Dec-18 22:19:04

It'll be modified to bypass the batteries. Whoever it is is watching the news because when it was given out that it could be okay at 4pm the drone appeared, then the next time the " all clear " was given it was 7pm----again the drone appeared, so why can't the media shut up and stop giving out these hints ?

I think it's shameful that nobody has come up with anything and whoever's behind this " stunt " will be laughing its insane head off.

merlotgran Thu 20-Dec-18 22:20:19

Members of the public have been asked to produce any video footage that might help identify the manufacturer of the drones?

Forgive me for thinking this is a bit 'Enid Blyton' when we have the RAF?

EllanVannin Thu 20-Dec-18 22:28:21

These insane computer buffs are ahead of others when it comes to technology. It's probably a home-built drone.

I can't believe that nobody has come up with anything to intercept it--- we're a laughing stock !

I believe that other countries have made plans to cope sith drone nuisance and there are technological solutions. I just wish they would tell our unbelievably imcompetent Minster for Transport Chris Grayling.

Post on MN Luton plane is taxing down the (Gatwick) runway.

Last I heard it is an environmentalist group. My son and family live near Gatwick and are/were supposed to be flying from there to Scotland for Christmas.
There has been a lot on the radio about Lockerbie this week as it is the 30th anniversary of the plane crash. Today one drone manned by a child, possibly in all innocence, let alone by some psychopath, could potentially do as much damage as that bomb. They should not be sold as toys and should all be traceable by some sort of microchip. Anyone found misusing one near an airport or any sort of transport should be charged with attempted murder with the appropriate sentence for that crime.
I used to live near Gatwick, there are lots of towns and villages quite close to it. Apart from Heathrow, I imagine all our airports have fields between them and a built up area. The perimeter is obviously vast but not beyond the possibility of being monitored by the military, who I gather have been drafted in. Could they jam it from a spyplane? Perhaps we need the Wimbledon Hawk.

Anja Thu 20-Dec-18 23:25:37

Exactly varian

There are solutions in place at other airports in other countries. BBC news tonight was interviewing someone in aviation who says the government is, yet again, ‘consulting’ and nothing gets done.

They have been warned time and time again.

Eloethan Thu 20-Dec-18 23:31:54

Apart from terrorists, they could be used to blackmail organisations and governments - and isn't there the potential that they could carry dangerous materials. Can't they just ban the sale of drones to private individuals?

Cherrytree59 Thu 20-Dec-18 23:45:52

Aviation tracker shows that plane is now at a standstill.

Which makes me wonder why they are unable to track the drones.

I expect at the moment they just do not know which radio frequency the drones are using
Or there are several drones all with different radio frequency confused

Eloethan Fri 21-Dec-18 00:08:01

It's all very odd.

Riverwalk Fri 21-Dec-18 00:22:42

Did I just imagine it, or did the R4 midnight news really say that there is no actual film footage of the drone?

Anja Fri 21-Dec-18 07:30:03

It’s a plot by No 10 to draw attention away from Brexit chaos surely?
