Keeping bananas fresh

What is the best way to store bananas, please?
I just need them to last until boxing day, and it seems a bit hit and miss these days as to how long fruit lasts.

I used to wrap them tightly and individually in tin foil then in the salad draw of the fridge, it worked for me.

Don’t put them in the fridge anyway- they go black. Just somewhere cool and they should keep a while. Even if they have a few spots on skin they’re still fine.

MissAdventure Sun 23-Dec-18 21:41:55

Oh thank you.
I haven't ever heard of that. smile

MissAdventure Sun 23-Dec-18 21:43:17

Ah. Fridge/no fridge..
That's why I've never know exactly how to store them.

Farmor15 Sun 23-Dec-18 21:48:56

I visit India quite often and bananas are never stored in fridge there and still keep for a few days after buying.

MissAdventure Sun 23-Dec-18 21:52:30

I have heard that hanging them keeps them fresher, too.

I read somewhere recently that you should wrap the stalk end tightly in cling film . It prohibits the banana giving off the gas that ripens it !

I haven’t tried it but might be worth trying .

I have a banana hanger!
We always buy them rather green as I can't stand ripe bananas.

Other retailers available

Don't put them in the fruit bowl with other fruit unless you want the other fruit to ripen quickly.

Never in the fridge and in a seperate fruit bowl to other fruits and at least a full metre away from other fruits .. It works for us.
We buy some yellow and some green for later in the week.

I do keep them in the fridge wrapped. The skins may go black but inside the banana is fine.

I break mine up and put them in different places.

mcem Mon 24-Dec-18 07:56:32

Oh beechnut if I tried that, I 'd forget where they were stashed and inevitably, weeks later, would find a couple of very nasty ones!

We have a yellow banana bag from Lakeland to store them in the fridge - it works very well.

Oh, so is it that that makes other fruit nearby over-ripen? Might give that a try then. I never keep my bananas in the same bowl as other fruit, but they are next to them, and I have noticed that satsumas/clementines seem to go off very quickly, so maybe it's the proximity of the bananas that's doing it - I'd always thought it was physical contact of bananas and other fruit!

Just looked on YouTube and the suggestion is that you can freeze them! Take the skins off and out them in a plastic bag first. Never heard that before. But wrapping the ends seems to be popular too.

MissAdventure Mon 24-Dec-18 09:29:59

Which end? smile
Both, maybe?

Fennel Mon 24-Dec-18 12:00:06

If just until Boxing Day, buying greenish ones today they shouldn't need any special care.
Husband likes his over-ripe.

MissAdventure Mon 24-Dec-18 12:05:51

I'm not going out today.
My nanas are already bought. smile

Apparently you can freeze bananas and they turn into something like icecream. When I had a lot of rather ripe ones I chopped them and put them in a bag in the freezer. But I forgot to label the bag. Months later I found this bag of dodgy looking short tubular lengths and thought they could be cooked sausages so I defrosted them.

They were a squidgy horrible mess of banana pieces which went straight into the recycling.

I can only eat the really hard nearly green ones. Too much sugar in a ripe one which means I have to cut out other things. I love ripe ones too, I feel quite aggrieved.
