I was reminded of this incident when reading on ongoing thread about invisibility after a certain age.
A few years back, I was walking up a famous pedestrian shopping street in the heart of Rome (where I live).
I was in the blackest of moods and on the verge of tears, preoccupied with a serious personal worry.
A young man stepped in front of me to offer me some pamphlet or to sell some trinket - I don't remember, and I brushed him off and walked on. I could hear a voice calling "Signora! Signora" but took no notice until another pedestrian tapped me on the shoulder and indicated that I was being called.
I turned around and the same young man called out to me "Signora! You have a beautiful smile!". I wasn't even aware that I HAD smiled at him.
Everyone turned to look at me and I blushed to my roots. Then they all smiled at me. I smiled back and literally bounced on up the road - my black mood totally vanished.
A sideline: I live in on a minor road from which it is quite difficult to drive out into the busy main road. Usually, I am patient but, if I'm in a hurry, I just lower my window and smile out at the oncoming traffic. You'd be surprised how many people slow down enough to give me precedence!
