It has always seemed ridiculous to me that people are judged on what is after all, an accidental arrangement of features.

Because the media is so critical of human flaws, those seeking a career in the media have their features and indeed bodies, tweaked to make them fit the accepted standard of beauty. Following this, insecure people copy the celebrities and emulate these changes to their own bodies and faces.

Yet, look at this more confident people who have achieved success with a huge nose and less than model looks ..... Barbra Streisand for example.

I would not denigrate people for commenting on ohthers appearances .... it seems to be the way of the world, led by the media. Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me!

Hi all, well I have never liked my nose, its a bit large, but not as big as Davina's. My husband actually liked it! His was not small either. Now I am an old lady I don't care two hoots.

Actually personal appearance is extremely important when it comes to celebrities who are role models (whether we like it or not) for younger people, including our grandchildren. So as far as I'm concerned if celebs present themselves (whether fat, thin, tall or short) in inappropriate clothing I think they're fair game for comment. Additionally, I hate it that celebs these days seem to bleach their teeth and basically look quite ridiculous when they open their mouths and there are obviously sets of something in there that are definitely not what they were born with - not to comment on these things sends totally the wrong signals to our younger population - that unless you have sparkly white straight and perfect teeth you're somehow behind the times. Yes, we should comment - appearance is not just about body shape, it's about how you choose to cover it (or not cover it as the case may be).

At 72 I think Brenda Blethyn is absolutely great remembering her lines. How many of us could do what she does ? She certainly has my admiration. I can be like that at times and I'm not even acting hahahaha.

Grandma70s it was me who liked Maggie Smith-----a natural ! Very attractive as " Miss Jean Brodie ".

Kate Middleton has " well-bred " features. Another natural.

I agree with whoever said Maggie Smith was a favourite. Mine too. I don’t take to Judi Dench in any way.

Kate Middleton - I think she doesn’t have a beautiful face, but her elegance and general style mean it’s not important. She looks wonderful to me.

Trouble with speech Nonnie is different things annoy different people. There is a particular presenter who , imho, cannot pronounce the word 'thousand' correctly. All other words are well enunciated but they say, 'Thahsands' and it really irritates especially as the programme often refers to sums of money!

I love Judi Dench and Helen Mirren, wonderful actresses,and I adore their hairstyles,cant see why anyone could say anything negative about them,what was said?

Phew thanks PECS thought I was a horrible person until you said our likes and dislikes are irrational. Now I feel better about not liking certain celebrities. Just like I hate spiders.

I have never watched Vera, though, and wonder how someone so old is still working in the police force . I know the retirement age is higher now than it used to be at 48, but I think 72 is pushing it a bit.

I can't understand getting hurt on behalf of a celebrity.
I sometimes see incredibly rude comments here to posters, and yet people get really hot under the collar should anyone say something bad about a celebrity or royal.

PECS. Are you too prissy? Do you think you are? You /we can 'think' but voicing/ making public these thoughts has to be depending on content and not always advisable as without a doubt you will offend someone.

Well, I think Susan Boyle did a lot to dispel the idea that only the physically gifted can enchant people.

I do think though, that going onto that show puts you in the firing line as it were.

I saw a short video clip the other day of a large, rather nervous looking fiftyish lady coming out to face the panel on whatever the show is that has Simon Cowell and Robbie Williams on the panel. (The Voice?) They were both openly sneering and laughing as she walked to the centre stage. Clearly, someone who wasn't a size eight, perma tanned and pouting could be only a joke!
That kind of behaviour makes me boil; if you are in the public eye I don't think it is unreasonable to expect that people will discuss you and your work, but there is sensible discussion, which does not need to become cruelly hurtful or involve belittling sarcasm. The lady in question sang; she had a great voice and then of course the panel were standing up, clapping hands above their heads and displaying artificial amazement . What a false bunch of hypocrites. I hope that lady took her lovely voice back to Wales and sang to people who appreciated her, and were not so shallow.
