Hello - I'm new here and wanted to reach out for some guidance or advice. I recently started corresponding w/ a woman from South America. We met on On line dating site, we have been talking for about 6 months and she's coming to visit me next month. I was wondering, should I tell her about my denture before she comes here or wait to see her and tell her face to face? She's a wonderful woman, a little vain but is very kind...to be honest, we have fallen for one another however NEVER met...this is our first face to face meeting and I am so excited...however, I feel I must tell her at some point...the question is tell her over one of our phone calls or face to face...any advice??????????????

Please be very careful, she should have paid for her own ticket. Your post made me feel a little uncomfortable in that you seem to be head over heals about someone you have t met. She could have told you anything and it may not be true! I hope it is all as it seems, but don't rush into things until you know for certain what you are getting into. Play your cards close to your chest.

Given that what2do says he was uncomfortable about posting on Gransnet initially I don’t think we should belittle him by saying he’s had enough answers now or wondering why he wants advice from “the likes of us” .
I think we should be equals here on Gransnet, and anyone should be able ask whatever they like (within the “rules” obviously).

Still surprised that a man of OP’s years should feel the need to seek advice from the likes of us on GN?
How on earth has he coped with relationships up to now -or is it likely that there have not been (m)any?

Bellanonna Fri 05-Jul-19 22:44:26

What2do I think you’ve had all the replies you need now. Why not just give it a break?

tanith Fri 05-Jul-19 22:39:38

What2do why do you need to tell her? my husband eventually realised many months after we got together its really not a big thing.

What2do Fri 05-Jul-19 21:09:25

Thank you all for you advice and the wisdom around your guidance. Yes, I will be careful...she has been vetted, I am a cyber security professional, and I have triple checked to verify that who she is claiming to be, is really here...everything checks out...even got the catholic church involved, long story on that one...I too have heard the horror stories and expressed my concerns to her as well...she understands the need to be upfront and honest so, everything she has said is true...trust me, she's not perfect, no one is...she has faults just like me so I dont have any rose colored glasses on...so, like most here have conveyed, have fun and relax...but also remember "“keep your hand on your ha’penny!" I HEAR THAT!!!...no back to the subject, so no one thinks things will change once I tell her about my dentures? I decided to wait till she gets here to tell her...little nervous as to how to bring it up...so, any advice from those who confessed to their significant others that they have a denture? How did you go about doing it? Thanks everyone, this site is awesome...thought about not posting b/c...well I'm a guy and it says Grandsnet...but figured that could go for Grandpa as well smile thanks everyone and I look forward to hearing back from you

Why on earth would you be worried ? It's just teeth ! I met my husband when I was 53 and he was 64 - we'd been living together for several months before I realised he had a denture ( only because I noticed him cleaning them in the bathroom one day). He never takes them out except for cleaning and it's never been an issue - it's just teeth !

What2do - sorry!

Callistemon Tue 02-Jul-19 23:12:36

Too late for you What1do but a warning for others:

Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth,
And spotted the perils beneath,
All the toffees I chewed,
And the sweet sticky food,
Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth.

I wish I'd been that much more willin'
When I had more tooth there than fillin'
To pass up gobstoppers,
From respect to me choppers
And to buy something else with me shillin'.

When I think of the lollies I licked,
And the liquorice allsorts I picked,
Sherbet dabs, big and little,
All that hard peanut brittle,
My conscience gets horribly pricked.

My Mother, she told me no end,
"If you got a tooth, you got a friend"
I was young then, and careless,
My toothbrush was hairless,
I never had much time to spend.

Oh I showed them the toothpaste all right,
I flashed it about late at night,
But up-and-down brushin'
And pokin' and fussin'
Didn't seem worth the time... I could bite!

If I'd known I was paving the way,
To cavities, caps and decay,
The murder of fiIlin's
Injections and drillin's
I'd have thrown all me sherbet away.

So I lay in the old dentist's chair,
And I gaze up his nose in despair,
And his drill it do whine,
In these molars of mine,
"Two amalgum," he'll say, "for in there."

How I laughed at my Mother's false teeth,
As they foamed in the waters beneath,
But now comes the reckonin'
It's me they are beckonin'
Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth.

I get the feeling we won’t be going anywhere, BlueBelle!

BlueBelle Tue 02-Jul-19 21:50:37

No Daddima you are not alone I m wondering about this cyber security professional, his denture, the two knowledgable padres and the wonderful woman who is in his words, not perfect Where are we going next ?

Callistemon Tue 02-Jul-19 11:08:09

You are not alone Daddima grin

You know what they'd say if the sexes were reversed - the men don't mind and the boys don't matter.
I expect you're worried that over-enthusiastic kissing will dislodge them and then catastrophe will follow - which could happen but probably won't.
Could you drop casually in conversation, "By the way I wear a denture," and see what happens? Hopefully she won't cool off due to something so trivial. Good luck.

Lock up your valuables, OP. How do you know the 'Padres' communicated with each other? Why would they? This whole thread sounds like an elaborate wind up

vena11 Tue 02-Jul-19 10:44:57

Daddima I find it all odd.

Daddima Tue 02-Jul-19 10:32:42

Am I the only one who finds this question a wee bit odd?

blondenana Tue 02-Jul-19 10:27:43

Please do be careful especially if this lady is Philipino or Thai,or Chinese
I know of 2 people who did what you are doing ,long distance relationship, and both were conned out of a lot of money
I wish you well though and hope to hear how it went

annodomini Tue 02-Jul-19 10:16:26

a denture is a normal expression for a partial set, or a single one on a plate. My dentist threatened me with a denture if my crowned front teeth wouldn't take a new crown. So far, I have managed to preserve the crowns.

Bellanonna Tue 02-Jul-19 10:08:23

Sorry, but I’m rather cynical. In the OP she is a “wonderful woman” and “kind”. Later on she’s “not perfect by any means”. Also, why would the matter of her paying for a return visit have cropped up at this point? ?
Padre is certainly an Armed Forces word, and not one a Catholic would use about their priest. Odd....

EllanVannin Tue 02-Jul-19 10:02:37

One tooth ? Must be Juanita ! A pickle-chaser.

Callistemon Tue 02-Jul-19 09:44:35

Padre - yes, Naval padre springs immediately to mind!

My denture - perhaps it's just the one tooth.
Could you have an implant done before she gets here?
They can be really very good.

NotSpaghetti Tue 02-Jul-19 09:05:50

Be cautious What2do as even if you have a lovely visit (and I really hope you do), the long distance relationship is a tricky one. I speak from my son’s experience of a 3 year relationship with a very nice young woman from America. They saw each other every four months or so, taking it in turns to visit and always had a great time and seemed more and more in love. They talked for hours, emailed and sent little gifts - it was lovely to see him so happy.

Then, after a lot of thought, he moved over to be with her and over about six months, it became clear that although they loved each other’s company on visits and holidays, they found they had no chance on a day-to-day basis as when working, shopping for groceries, dealing with relatives and the ordinary pressures of daily life, it just didn’t work.
It became extremely strained and difficult, and they had very different expectations of life, yet they had spent hundreds of hours chatting and had both invested such a lot in the relationship.

Whilst I’m not by any means saying all long distance relationships are doomed in the day-to-day, I just want to advise caution. IF things go well, be wiser than my son, make sure you have the chance to see her “ordinary” life, not just her “holiday mood” before you commit.

As to your dentures... if they matter, she’s pretty shallow and you’re wasting your time!
Good luck.

Still makes me wonder about it all to be honest.

MawBroonsback Tue 02-Jul-19 08:39:32

That figure M0nica my apologies.
I should have realised there was something “lost in translation” as in the UK we tend to refer to “dentures” not “A denture” but it had occurred to me that OP’s first language might not be English.

M0nica Tue 02-Jul-19 07:51:59

As a catholic (and ex-army brat) the word 'padre' says to me:
1) What2do is American and 2) He is ex-US military.
