Like so many others, my state pension age is now 66, so still 17 months to go. Many of us will get nowhere near the “universal” state pension if we’ve been opted out while paying into company pensions. Those of us in most parts of England are paying out hand over fist for bus fares we wouldn’t have to pay at all if we lived in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland. I’m confidently expecting there’ll be no perks at all by the time I finally officially retire, if we’re thrown a few crumbs from the rich man’s table it’ll come as a big surprise. If I’d been born 5 years earlier I’d be over £40,000 better off, but who cares? I doubt very much we’ll be protected from more disadvantage. Even I’m past caring really.
