I too remember that brick hammock Urmonstongran, really thick, with loops and a sanitary belt. Wearing something like that is why I have always been repelled by the idea of thongs as you sometimes see the waist band peeking above trousers; it looks too like a sanitary belt to me! My mum didn't really tell me much other than telling me 'you are a woman now' when I started my periods, and advising me to throw the used towels, carefully wrapped, into the solid fuel boiler. I don't remember where and when STs were bought, but as Mum worked and would do most of the shopping on her own, I assume she just bought them in the small supermarket. I do remember a wool shop nearby though, which sold them, isn't it funny how those shops were always run by a 'Miss'?
