Can anyone explain “woke” to me

I am used to feeling that I live in a foreign country, as I am baffled by a lot of the speech that the youngsters use. Quite often the word that used is the total opposite of its original meaning. For example my GC saying the chocolate cake she had was so dirty, meaning delicious.

These words are now appearing in print and leave me totally baffled. I read an article about Boomers at war with Generation Z which I just about get. The problem was the word ‘woke’ which seems to be everywhere.

So wise Boomers, what the heck does it mean?

Speaking for myself, I only ever access GN from a PC, and these jokey emojis are completely incomprehensible!

Sorry too for overreacting - I think I find claptrap quite an aggressive word so it really jarred in what was an interesting thread

Thanks PamelaJ1
No offence meant, suziewoozie.

She used the word claptrap - not jokey not funny but stupid and rude. Anyway she can defend herself if she wants to

PamelaJ1 Sun 17-Nov-19 15:12:12

Suzie, flowerpower used a jokey emoji.

suziewoozie Sun 17-Nov-19 15:01:09

That’s bloody rude flower just dismissing a whole lot of interesting posts. Says much about you

Yes thats the only meaning I know.
Strange reading all this other claptrap ?

I agree with Ginny, Merlot etc. I 'woke' at 3am today and am still awake and not happy. I think I have been abducted and put back on the wrong planet. Not a good start to the day.

Today I am woke. I was awakened by a loud noise by someone else who is woke. I'd like to give them a piece of my mind but that might be considered 'woke'. 'B******s! is that woke enough?

flossie thanks for starting this thread. It made me think. What I find depressing is posters not understanding or accepting that language changes over time, new words come in, existing words change in meaning/ nuance. That’s always happened and I, for one, will always want to keep upto date and aware.

This has been really enlightening and amusing. I do get frustrated with these new words, but I think is might be justified in this case. I can’t really think of a word from the past that covered it.

Why don't we just stick to using standard English we can all understand, and leave all these nonsensical corruptions to those who want to be seen as terribly 'with-it'...but are actually just showing what sheep they are?

humptydumpty Fri 15-Nov-19 12:22:00

That too maybe!

Gonegirl Fri 15-Nov-19 11:53:47

Oh, I thought you meant the oldies got abandoned.

humptydumpty Fri 15-Nov-19 10:37:47

I once heard a comment that, as soon as 'oldies' understand slang words, they're abandoned - sounds about right to me, by the time we've understood what 'woke' means it'll have been dropped!

Urmstongran Fri 15-Nov-19 10:20:57

I still fail to grasp why my example was ridiculed? Maybe I’m just not ‘woke’ enough.

'Urban Dictionary defines "woke" as being aware, and "knowing what's going on in the community." It also mentions its specific ties to racism and social injustice.'

Seems to be the norm for some these days Gonegirl

Personally I think we’ve become too PC nowadays to the detriment of common sense.

Gonegirl Fri 15-Nov-19 09:53:01

Why has everybody got to be angry on the part of everyone else these days?

Gonegirl Fri 15-Nov-19 09:51:43

That old Sw?!

BradfordLass72 Fri 15-Nov-19 09:38:35

Any word which baffles can easily be defined by Uncle Google.

All you do is put the word in double speech marks followed by def
And up pops the defintion.

I typed in "woke" def and got this:

alert to injustice in society, especially racism.
"we need to stay angry, and stay woke"

The Urban Dictionary is also a place to look, if you don't mind that it's a no-holds-barred sort of place.
