Christmas is such a good time for music. As we covered Christmas songs in a previous post recently my favourite Christmas hymn is "Once in Royal David's City" but there was a tear in my eye this afternoon listening to the 4/5 yr olds at DGS 's school carol service singing "Away in a Manger".

Oh Holy Night for me too.

No matter how many times I hear it, it never fails to have me reaching for a hanky.

All the more poignant when children perform this so I do know what’s ahead when I attend a carol concert on Wednesday. GD2 will be one of the choir singers and has assured me they will be singing Oh Holy Night ?

In my youth I had a good voice and sang in our church choir.
'Three Kings from Persian Lands Afar, was my solo for a couple of Christmases and is still my favourite.

Nowadays I couldn't hold a tune in a wheelbarow.

The Carol of the Bells, sung by Pentatonix who make it sound as if there are instruments but it is all a capella.
Having read here about 'The Shepherds' Carol', went to listen to it and that too is lovely.
I also like 'Born on a New Day'.

'In the Bleak Midwinter' made me cry as a child and probably would now and not because winters in Yorkshire were often very bleak indeed .

My eldest daughter was married on the 22nd of December and walked down the aisle to O Holy Night - simply beautiful and it always brings a tear to my eye as it did to most of the congregation on the day. I also love 'Somewhere in my Memory', Bette Midlers 'From a Distance - Christmas Version' , and John Rutters 'Candlelight Carol'

In the Bleak Mid Winter makes me want to cry, it in so beautiful. We sang it at the cathedral last week in GDs carol concert. All that can vaulting and beautiful music. I did find my self looking at the tool marks on the pillars and thinking about the masons who carved them 1,000 years ago. ( rereading Pillars of the Earth )

When an American friend visited the cathedral last year he just stood and gasped at the beauty. We take so much of our history for granted.

Like Greyduster I think Chilcott's 'The Shepherd's Carol' is a really beautiful piece of music. On the same album (A Rose in the Middle of Winter) is 'Mid-Winter', (version for chorus, flute and harp) which is a stunningly good arrangement.

What is the Carol, please with "Do you see what I see", in the lyrics ?

In the bleak midwinter but definitely not to Greyduster's Harold Darke tune which our choirmaster is currently having us rehearse. I much prefer Gustav Holst's version which I remember from childhood.
