Not far from Seahouses is our favourite pub, The Ship at Low Newton. We were there yesterday for a walk on the beautiful beach followed by delicious food and local ales. (Lucky to live in Northumberland) It is very dog friendly too!

The Fleece Inn, Bretforton owned by NT but with a lovely landlord.

Just remembered another nice old pub that I went to with friends at lunchtimes now and then, The Mitre which was in some yard not far from High Holborn/ Fleet St.
Anyone know it? Full of Rumpole type characters downing large glasses of red wine.

Being a teenager in the sixties, I recall how special it felt on a visit to the Philharmonic about 5 years ago. All of the Beatles probably propped up the bar, right where I was standing! I was also (with hubby) given a personal tour of the gent's toilets. The urinals are blue/white china! Together with the other architectural features it is an amazing place and deserves its status. ?

Remember when we used to come home from an evening in a pub and your clothes and even your hairwould stink of cigarette smoke? Home, then all clothes in the linen basket.
Horrid really.

I remember going into a local pub before the ban and everyone seemed to be smoking, and said I'd not go in there again.

The smoking ban was a game changer for me , no more coughing and clothes smelling of stale cigarettes.

We have a couple of lovely local pubs that provide nice food, but would be too outing!

I can't name an absolute favourite as we have found a few good ones in our travels.
and my memory for names is rubbish

Another pub which I love is the Fleece Inn, Bretforton on the edge of the Cotswolds. It is now owned by the National Trust but is still a working pub. Built in the early 15th century, it is largely unchanged and a beautiful building with a lovely orchard around the back.

If you remember the Trip to Jerusalem you will probably also remember The Royal Children but my favourite was the Flying Horse. Turned into a Berni Inn in the 80’s and now a shop I think.

Not a pub person, probably due to having been raised in an atmosphere of pubs being drinking shops for men. I do enjoy a visit and would love to have a nearby one with a cosy atmosphere rather than the big chain type that seems to be everywhere now.

There is something special about a good Devon pub, or, for that matter a good British pub. There is no equivalent in the rest of the world.

Unfortunately,some good old Cornish pubs have gone a bit upmarket and trendy to cater for the second homers.

Gilly discovered Seahouses last year.
We were staying at Haggerston castle for a few days and we loved the area so much that we decided to look for accommodation in seahouses.
We were very lucky and managed a cancellation.?

Yes I agree Dec46 Philharmonic pub is amazingly friendly. Good drink prices, delicious food and fabulous interior. Hard to beat. DH and I always go in there for a drink when visiting Liverpool Philharmonic we wouldn't pay their extortionate drink prices

Hardly any pubs left here. Demographics. And cheap drinks in supermarkets. It’s a shame because pubs were where people met and socialised. Also where my parents spent all the money on themselves and neglected me. Other kids were the same.
They have their place. I do like an hour in a pub. It’s not hurting anyone.

Gillybob, is Seahouses anywhere South Shields? My childhood summer holidays were spent there at my granny’s house.

No pub visiting but I still can taste the chips from Frankies chippy on the beach.

It’s true many pubs are closing - some will be no loss. Huge rooms, high ceilings, sticky carpets etc.

However in their place are many independent bars. Some serve food, some not. So much choice where we live in the town centre. I counted 8 just now, without trying too hard!

Mind you it costs a king’s ransom to drink out these days - a pint and a large wine average a tenner!

I have sadly, never been to any of these pubs, some seem well worth a visit!
Some of the pubs in my area that were wonderful, have, as purplepoppies says, been converted , or gone downhill / upmarket.
Have just seen that lemongrove has posted about The Trip! I have drunk there, and in 2 others with the 'oldest pub' claim: The Fighting Cocks in St. Albans and the Bell in Finedon.
The Cock at Broom is another pub without a bar and on my last visit, had lovely beer drawn from the barrel.
Walking the West Highland Way took us to The Drovers - quite the strangest pub I have ever been in - and Glencoe Inn that still bore the No Campbells sign, on condition they didn't enforce it!
My village pub is nothing special, but maintains a tradition of a warm welcome, good beer and pub games.

I ve never had a ‘pub’ I m sure I ve missed out but there you go that’s how it is I ve been in pubs mainly on holiday but never had a ‘local’ i m not against drinking though except over the top drunks

The Philharmonic is beautiful. I do love Liverpool.
The Ship in Aspley and the Zetland were my favourites when I was a young punk in Huddersfield. A documentary was made about us.
In Leeds I liked the Fav, the Duck and Drake and the Imperial. Frequented many more.

Madmaggie it sounds blissful. I didn’t realise it had a garden, it was too windy anyway while we were there, have to have a look next time. We loved Seahouses it had a very relaxed and unique feeling about it. Roll on spring.

There's also another almost opposite one of Liverpool Central train station's exit, which is fantastic. Can I remember the name? No of course not

And the Scotch Piper is a fabulous little place with some great ruins behind it and peacocks regularly seen!

gillybob I was brought up in the North East and we used to go on coach outings to Sea Houses so happy childhood memories there for me. I revisited as an adult which is when I discovered The Olde Ship.
I would love to visit Dun Cow Jane10 sounds such fun.
