What do you call it. For me it’s always the sofa

Artdecogran Thu 13-Feb-20 16:32:38

Don’t have one! Just chairs.

I grew up with a couch in the lounge. I once heard someone say a lounge sounds like a pub and that you are always lounging. Sitting room sounds too grand so I tend to say living room now as it sounds neutral. And I say sofa now. Settee sounds a bit posh and affected to me and couch a bit common (apologies, don’t want to offend anyone.) but DiL says couch in lounge so say that there!!

Sofa here, used to say settee. Couch sounds old fashioned

Usually settee - which was in the front room until we moved to a house where the sitting room isn't in the front.

Davenport was another in the US

You can’t have a sofa- or settee-potato, though!

I am going to be an unashamed couch-potato (feet up on the sofa) with my Kindle, for the rest of the afternoon, after 48 hours at dd’s, helping with 3 very little Gdcs.
Bliss!

Settee. Couch makes me think of potatoes!

My granny used to have a couch. I haven’t heard the word for years, except for psychiatrist’s couch.
We have an item in the sitting room which we bought as a bed- settee. It is now a sofa- bed, I suppose.

I grew up with my mother saying don’t sit on the three piece!
I now sit/sprawl/lay on my sofa in the sitting room?

TrendyNannie6 Thu 13-Feb-20 10:11:16

Yes I also grew up with my parents saying settee, but I’ve called them sofas for many years now, mostly as when we have gone to replace one, online and in the stores they are known as sofas

Ancient old squishy sofa in the living room. I keep meaning to get a new one but never get round to it.

cornergran Thu 13-Feb-20 08:45:58

I grew up with a settee, now we have sofas. Can’t recall when the description changed. Never had a couch.

M0nica Thu 13-Feb-20 08:45:38

Settee/sofa, completely interchangeable. I grew up with settee.

Charleygirl5 Thu 13-Feb-20 08:40:23

I also have a living room where my settee is.

shandi6570 Thu 13-Feb-20 08:38:21

Sofa in the living room now, in the old house it was a settee in the lounge. How odd, I never thought about it before and have no explanation.

Marydoll Thu 13-Feb-20 08:36:28

I use all three.

travelsafar Thu 13-Feb-20 08:32:07

Why are there different names for the same piece of furniture?? Settee, Sofa, Couch.smile

QuaintIrene Thu 13-Feb-20 08:19:22

Settee.

downtoearth Thu 13-Feb-20 07:50:26

rubysong Wed 12-Feb-20 23:43:16

Sofa in the sitting room.

notanan2 Wed 12-Feb-20 23:33:20

Sofa because thats what you buy/what the shops call them

callgirl1 Wed 12-Feb-20 23:17:29

Settee in the living room. My grandma had a Chesterfield, but it was much bigger and more solid than a normal settee.

Allegretto Wed 12-Feb-20 23:11:20

Usually sofa. Occasionally settee.
