What do you call it. For me it’s always the sofa

Nannapat1 Sat 15-Feb-20 10:46:35

My settees are in my living room.

Yennifer Thu 13-Feb-20 21:02:08

Sofa in the living room! That sounds like Cluedo lol

MissAdventure Thu 13-Feb-20 20:56:53

Ah, what a pity. I would hate that.

Ninarosa Thu 13-Feb-20 20:36:58

Staying true to my Yorkshire mining family roots and saying settee and living room, although I have moved on from having three legs and a house brick under the settee, as my poor old Mam tolerated for years.

Callistemon Thu 13-Feb-20 20:27:03

well, the front door is at the front grin

grannypiper Thu 13-Feb-20 20:23:13

My lovely comfy sofa's are in the livingroom

MissAdventure Thu 13-Feb-20 20:20:39

Ah, I see. I think. smile

Callistemon Thu 13-Feb-20 19:57:11

just a back to front house.

Callistemon Thu 13-Feb-20 19:57:00

but I haven't got a front room grin

MissAdventure Thu 13-Feb-20 19:30:27

Well, that's called the back room round these parts.

Callistemon Thu 13-Feb-20 19:26:17

Couch and front room (and I haven't even got a back room)
Our front room's at the back.

MissAdventure Thu 13-Feb-20 19:25:09

These threads can sometimes turn to words like "common" and "snob" being used.

I can never imagine my parents saying sofa. smile

SalsaQueen Thu 13-Feb-20 19:22:00

Settee. I've got 2 of them, in my front room. I can't understand anyone being "posh" about things.

kathsue Thu 13-Feb-20 19:04:39

Used to say settee but recently bought two sofas from 'Sofology'. They'll be in the front room.
When my DD set up home she still called her sitting room/ lounge the front room even though it was at the back of the house.confused

MamaCaz Thu 13-Feb-20 18:50:20

Once again, I have somehow pressed the wrong button and posted before editing. Grrr!

MissAdventure Thu 13-Feb-20 18:49:35

I enjoy using words that are more unusual.
Couch and front room (and I haven't even got a back room)

Mapleleaf Thu 13-Feb-20 18:48:36

I tend to say settee, but sometimes say sofa.
It's in the lounge.

MamaCaz Thu 13-Feb-20 18:48:19

Sofa and settee used here.

I've never used couch myself, but don't have anything against its use.
I had imagined that it came from the French verb coucher', but a quick check on WordReference shows that the Fench noun ^couche is sometimes used to mean 'bed'.

To me, either of those roots seems likely, and as my OH spends half his time lying on this piece of furniture, I think we should start calling ours the couch from now on! smile

Grandmaof2 Thu 13-Feb-20 18:44:21

Years ago I used to say settee nowadays its sofa

anniezzz09 Thu 13-Feb-20 18:39:40

Sofa. Isn't couch American?

GrandmaMoira Thu 13-Feb-20 18:37:55

Setter or sofa. I would never use couch.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 13-Feb-20 18:30:40

I am currently lounging on my sofa in the sitting room.

Callistemon Thu 13-Feb-20 18:19:14

Australians have lounges to sit on in their open plan living rooms.

Ngaio1 Thu 13-Feb-20 17:51:55

Sofa. Couch seems to be what the Australians have in their "lounge room!" I was taught that lounges were only to be found in an hotel or at an airport.

threexnanny Thu 13-Feb-20 17:39:49

I haven't heard the word couch used in UK for anything other than doctors' couch, but it is quite widely used in USA.
'Lounge' reminds me of hotels and airports.

Sofa or settee in the sitting room here.
