The other day we were thinking about what makes a person charismatic. We could think of several men - some of whom I don’t like although I can still accept that they have charisma . But when it came to women I was stuck.
Who do you think is charismatic ? Can you think of a woman who fits this description ?

Went off Joanna Lumley rather after her involvement in the debacle of B Johnson’s bridge (not the latest one) which they wasted £53m on without a brick being laid

I think most of this is speculation. You have to meet in person, or at least see them on stage to feel their charisma. We have a few actual meetings confirmed here, Springsteen, Gordon Brown, Joanna Lumley. Any more who can say without doubt who is charismatic in real life?

People are drawn to charismatic people like a moth to a flame, I feel that Mandela, Elvis and Princess Diana had that quality. Henry 8th, although a tyrant, had it. No one will ever stop investigating his life and writing about him.

BlueBelle
Absolutely agree. I think the best nomination ( on here) was Boudicca. Maybe it was a joke in reference to some of the suggestions.

Joanne 'I don't do food' lumley. No thanks.

Glad someone thinks that ginny it is SO personal and that’s why I don’t think we can judge celebrities as we know zilch, we only get a tiny snapshot and it’s got to be more than looks or voice it’s a connection and you can’t have that with someone on the TV or cinema screen You can admire their bravery their skills their looks but you can’t connect with them even in only a fleeting connection you can feel charisma

You see momma Joanna Lumley lovely lady that she is irritates me with that breathy voice so has zilch charisma for me likewise Princess Di with her lowered eyelashes that was manipulation not charisma in my opinion ...but hey ho we re all different

My thoughts precisely Bluebell. Surely it's all a matter of who WE are as to how we view others. Some characters listed here, who clearly impress other G'netters, make me cringe, whilst others leave me cold. I think some are equating glamour and extrovert behaviour with 'charisma'.

Just the same if a person is now dead. We can only judge by the effect they had on others, a second-hand emotion.

I have always liked and admired Judy Dench and Annie Lennox. However, the one woman I know with absolute confidence has charisma in spades is Joanna Lumley.

As a young teenager I went to stay with an older cousin in London and my cousin and her husband took me to see a play. Griff Rhys Jones and Joanna Lumley were in the play. Griff Rhys Jones was amusing and clever but Joanna Lumley, oh my! What a presence. She wafted in and weaved a spell around her and enraptured everyone. It was nothing to do with the role she was playing, it was her, she had an indefinable quality. I have adored her ever since. If you watch any of her travel shows she draws people to her who have no idea who she is, she just has a warmth and magnetism about her.

Interestingly I have a friend who did some work with Huw Edwards and said that he was much the same.

I think there is a lot of muddling up of charisma with charm strength, determination, power here, I think they are very different things and I also can’t see one person mention in any of this thread who I would call charismatic, charisma is something you can’t really explain and much more personal you have to be in the persons company to feel it
I had one boyfriend who had charisma he was the least handsome but he had deep deep brown eyes that somehow held your gaze longer than you expected and you melted He was also a very damaged soul
How anyone could imagine Ruth Davidson, or edwina Curry had charisma I can’t think in my wildest dreams, or Gina miller (who I admire) ...they have strength Very strong characters but charisma Nah

Annie - re Gordon Brown - he's sincere and truthful imo.
Qualities not often found in politicians these days.

Niobe Sat 15-Feb-20 18:46:18

Sorry, charisma!

Niobe Sat 15-Feb-20 18:44:22

Anniebach, totally agree with you regarding Gordon Brown. He is an amazing speaker.
I must confess that I think that Dick Strawbridge has carisma too ! Don’t like his moustache but his sense of humour and devotion to his family shines out from the screen.

Chestnut yes I agree you have to meet the person, I listed
Alan Rickman but say it was lust ! The Kennedy’s, it was
the start of a new world and Camelot, it was my imagination,
not with Gordon Brown ,

Callistemon Sat 15-Feb-20 13:55:31

Has anyone mentioned Justin Trudeau?

I'm not sure if men find him charismatic but women most certainly do.

Chestnut Sat 15-Feb-20 12:30:42

Anniebach - you have just proved my point that true charisma is not something that you can identify unless you meet in person. It is a chemistry thing. You can only go by what people who have met them in person say, and even then do we all see charisma in the same person? Would I find Gordon Brown charismatic as you do?
