I have just read this online and I’m very shocked. I can’t say I know much about her but watched Love Island last year. I know she’s been charged with assaulting her boyfriend but he was standing by her.

I just think it’s very sad.

Also CF wasn’t on bail because she could afford it. Our system doesn’t work like that. She wasn’t a risk to anyone, apart from herself, and our prisons are full! There are some truly dreadful criminals out on bail these days I can assure you.

Amd some minor ones in prison because they cant pay fines and charges.

She was deemed a risk to her ex. It was a bail condition that she made no contact. She breached her bail but still managed to stay out.

TV news programs have thought it so important that it has been at the head of many programs.

I agree. Someone awaiting trial committed suicide. Suicide is always tragic. But the story hasnt expended to look at the overall rates of suicide in those awaiting trial which might actually be a public interest "news" story

I have done work with prisons and there are many in prison that should be in a mental health facility. They are appalling places and bullying is rife. However, that isn’t the point of this thread.

I am an old curmudgeon-- - accepted !! and I have to admit that I haven't read read any of this post. At this point, I am extremely fed up with hearing about this unfortunate incident. The worst thing is that TV news programs have thought it so important that it has been at the head of many programs. There are so many more devastating and newsworthy subjects that should be deemed much more important than this.

suziewoozie Mon 17-Feb-20 13:22:41

not I wonder how many of the media lovies piling in with their uninformed comments give one ds MN about the appalling conditions of our prison estate or tie mental health services therein

The question is Ready what are the issues facing the CJS in general ? What support structures are in place for all participants - victims, witnesses, accused in general?

I guess if she hadnt been able to afford bail there are medical staff in jail although theyre over stretched and understaffed and people still commit suocide awaiting trail.

Those people arent public figures so maybe it hadnt as much to do with being public as people are claiming. It cant have helped but domestic abusers dont cope well mentally when caught and the street angel veil slips. Thats why a condition of bail is staying away. Its not umcommon for shame to cause a downturn im mental health causing suicide or escalation of violence/murder. They've lost their control. Without media.

Now, the celebs etc "blaming" the CPS and the bail conditions could do some good here and look at the suicide rates in jail with those awaiting trial and lack of nursing and support staff there.. but they wont thats not a fashionable cause

Thank you Delila that was kind of you to say so.

Urmstongran Mon 17-Feb-20 13:11:43

SparkleFizz I think Philip Schofield and Holly Willoghby take turns in crying over something ...
?

Whatever went on with the DA incident, I still think she was hounded. If the bodycam footage was humiliating for her, maybe she had been drinking. The fact is the papers would have got hold of it and it would have been broadcast to the world. Either way, she has taken her own life and the fact that she chose to present a show like LI has absolutely nothing to do with it. It’s a job and it pays well. Presenting LI doesn’t make her less deserving of our sympathy. Such condescending comments. Beyond belief and from the usual quarter. I suppose she’d be more worthy if she presented Newsnight?

All the lovies are out in force this morning on tv saying they couldn't eat their roast dinner yesterday as they were so upset. I'm finding this all so strange and sad but a lot of people seem to have forgotten that there was a domestic violence incidence that happened. Many men are afraid to speak out when in a violent relationship as they are not believed.

Delila Mon 17-Feb-20 12:04:57

What a thoughtful and compassionate post Urmstongran.

OMG, I don't watch Dancing on Ice but I caught the first few minutes with the blubbering Schofield. What a silly carry on. The poor lady who died ,so sad. Once again, we know nothing. Was addiction part of the picture? People coupleing on an island and having sex for other people to watch???

The world has gone mad.

ReadyMeals Mon 17-Feb-20 10:53:25

Lol Sparkle, I think Philip Schofield is with the rent-an-emotion agency :D

Sparklefizz Mon 17-Feb-20 10:34:21

It may be that more information was about to come out via the bodycam footage and past relationships which caused more anxiety.

Laura Whitmore, her friend, said in her speech that CF did have support but said that seemingly it wasn't enough .... and for some people, however much support they have, they are a bottomless pit. Perhaps that is why someone said she was "draining". She had a friend staying with her who was supporting her.

I feel "enough now", she is still front page headlines today when there are horrible things happening in the UK with the floods and Corona. Time to let her friends and family have some peace. I don't know why Phillip Schofield had to tearfully jump on the bandwagon last night in Dancing on Ice. I've come to the conclusion he is an attention-seeker.

ReadyMeals Mon 17-Feb-20 10:22:03

I had always assumed that celebrities had their agents manning their social media accounts. I had no idea they sit there posting all by themselves. I thought they might have incognito accounts to chat to their friends.

Urmstongran Mon 17-Feb-20 10:18:30

For the famous, I imagine Twitter is addictive.

I do wonder if CF felt unmoored by the crisis. Shame is an awful feeling. And the wait for the court case can only have increased her mounting anxiety. That body-cam footage by the police. She will have known that ‘showbiz’ were about to learn of her secrets. Poor girl she will have felt trapped.

She had her demons it sounds. Anxiety, depression, low self esteem, no settled romance, self medicating with alcohol which seemingly led to violence. She spoke of being told she ‘was draining’ when she confided in someone.

All this is beyond distressing, for her, her family and friends. I don’t think she could deal with the shame.

suziewoozie Mon 17-Feb-20 10:03:39

The question is Ready what are the issues facing the CJS in general ? What support structures are in place for all participants - victims, witnesses, accused in general? What extra support should be in place for those who may be judged more vulnerable because of age ( young/ old) physical disability, mental health problems, degree of trauma caused by the crime ( suffering it, witnessing it), Help with getting to court ( many have been closed), availability of legal aid. Facilities at the court - separation of parties etc. There seems to be no general public appetite for a proper discussion about our CJS and how it fails hundreds of people daily. Just addressing the needs of the accused in this atypical case will only skew the discussion to the detriment of many others.

suziewoozie Mon 17-Feb-20 09:54:30

But some people in public life are architects of their own destruction. Others, like some women MPs are mocked, threatened and trolled on social media for just doing their jobs.

ReadyMeals Mon 17-Feb-20 09:48:51

Article in Daily Mail today a source says the main thing on her mind was if the bodycam footage of the police visit would come out. Seems to me it implies she felt shame about what happened. Which at least would have made it likely she'd seek help for her behaviour (caveat: if it happened) It's especially sad when someone who could have come through a crisis an even stronger person gives up just before that breakthrough happens.

There was a time in my younger life when I was suicidal, but I fortunately came through it to have 30 (and ongoing) happy years with my current husband. I'd have missed out on that if I had died.

Given that not many of us want to CPS to just drop charges every time a victim asks them to, what could have been done differently to help Caroline through this?

Daisymae Mon 17-Feb-20 09:44:55

Only to a certain degree, life can take anybody down when you are not looking. That's when the intensive scrutiny starts. Some attract more negative publicity than others but no one in public life is immune.

TerriBull Mon 17-Feb-20 09:26:38

I disagree Daisymae, I've given an example in my post above of a high profile actress who doesn't live her life in the public domain. I imagine it depends on the sort of person you are as to how much of your life you are prepared to reveal, some remain completely anonymous when they aren't working, maybe the occasional red carpet appearance written into a contract to promote a piece of work. Unfortunately, social media for some is tantamount to "moths to a flame" subliminally I imagine many users know at it's worst, it's damaging particularly to a vulnerable soul such as Caroline, but we live in the age of public outpourings and faux hugging and blubbering, exemplified by the recent Philip Schofield nonsense. So many want to be part of all of that.

suziewoozie Mon 17-Feb-20 09:22:29

But Daisy you can control fame- see TerriBulls post - she’s spot on. The real issue is choosing to be the presenter of a programme like LI..

May7 Mon 17-Feb-20 09:16:13

Well posted Daisymae
