Got to thinking just now - can we be kind about posters❓

With all this about meanness nowadays on social media how about a little experiment.

I’ve posted.

Can the next person up look at the post above them (about me, to start with) and try to say something nice about the one before? We do ALL have good qualities I’m certain......

It might make for an uplifting thread?

If you can’t (or don’t ‘know’ the poster above to you) leave it and wait. Come back later when you recognise a poster’s style.

Off we go. I’m waiting (in trepidation ha!)

Haha, a clip round the ear needed.
I find Jane10’s posts amusing and never in a sarcastic way, but lightly amusing, the best kind.?
Elegran is a sort of elder statesperson of GN ( in the nicest way) who always posts well balanced and fair comments.

Elegran Mon 02-Mar-20 13:12:37

If you are interested in words, Rufus, you might also like "clipshear" the Scottish for earwig ( insect order Dermaptera) which are reputed to creep into your ears. It and "clype" are connected linguistically.

I remember a small girl in my class buttonholing the headmaster and earnestly telling him about the misdeeds of a classmate. He thanked her gravely, and waited until she was gone before commenting "Wee clipshear!"

Jane10 Mon 02-Mar-20 13:04:17

Rufus2 this is obviously a very serious thread and I suspect that you and I are the culprits for subverting it. Clearly the forum police will be knocking on our doors soon.
Clype is a fine Scottish word for a grass or telltale.
Elegran is the voice of reason on Gransnet.

Rufus2 Mon 02-Mar-20 12:58:19

the named and shamed would report the post
Elegran I think my post might be a bit too suttle, even for you! grin IF my name appeared on said list, possibly at the top through no fault of my own, I would never snitch, as evidenced on several occasions throughout my GN career! smile
I'm too easy going for my own good, but I would be most interested to see what names actually appear! Whose going to post them? If nobody is game, then they might as well shut up! hmm
Btw; what's "clype" Scottish for?

Elegran Mon 02-Mar-20 12:33:58

What would happen, Rufus is that the named and shamed would report the post naming them, and GNHQ would delete it and reprimand the person who posted it, as being a nasty and personal attack against a poor innocent persecuted soul who would claim to be "just joking" or "just expressing an opinion" or "I am new here and they are ganging up against me".

Those who pass the most aggressive remarks are often also the first to clype to teacher when someone hits back.

Rufus2 Mon 02-Mar-20 12:05:35

alas the same old names turn up ready to spoil things. I think it is impossible to carry out a thread like this as it will be sabotaged
NanKate The rotten cads! I'm a "Newbie" so I can't think of to whom you refer, but have you thought of "naming and shaming" rather than rely on innuendo? That might frighten them off, unless they're pranksters with a sense of humour.
It might be worth a go. See what happens! shock

lavender, nankate and witzend get my vote.

Wise words, great post, BradfordLass?

Callistemon Sun 01-Mar-20 22:57:16

Thank you BradfordLass and kiaora to you too.

I like lemongrove and appreciate her posts. A variety of moods emanante from this wise lady.

One of the things I really do appreciate about lemongrove is that she takes the thread seriously, as the OP originally meant.

This is a thread, for instance, is about being pleasant, not a difficult concept one would think and yet clearly the intention has sped by some posters.

If that concept is beyond understanding and you have no pleasant words to say, pass right along please and contribute to a thread where the concept is: "it's all about me".

And on St David's Day, I would like to wish all our contributors from that wonderful Land of Song, a very happy and peaceful day.

lemongrove Sun 01-Mar-20 21:17:14

I must say that all of Cunco’s posts are measured, well thought out and sensible. He never becomes personal, or argues or condescends, and always stays calm.?

Urmstongran Sun 01-Mar-20 20:48:43

Lovely NanKate about Marydoll whom many of us feel the same about. She’s often struggling health wise but makes light of it (even though she shouldn’t as we who care about her are happy to listen).

Thanks gmarie for your kind words and keeping this lovely thread going!

Anyone ‘know’ gmarie? She’s next up!
?

NanKate Sun 01-Mar-20 20:19:13

Urmstongran I’ve just arrived at this thread and thought what a lovely idea to be positive and uplifting about each other but alas the same old names turn up ready to spoil things. I think it is impossible to carry out a thread like this as it will be sabotaged.

But in the spirit of the thread I want to state that Marydoll has made me laugh, been kind when I have been in the depths and is someone I can always turn to. Thank you Mary for being such a great contributor without a nasty bone in your body. ??

I'd hate to be standing too near Rufus when he does have a grudge to settle! grin
Elegran I can't tell if that's a grin or scowl! Whatever, it doesn't become you as Matriarch of the Clan. sad

I’ll eat my hat (or even yours, bobbing corks and all) if it was me.
Maw it wasn't you, but carry on eating and please don't choke on those corks; they're out of old Shiraz bottles and quite bitter! grin

Oops bikergran with no "s" . Maybe a different biker? wink

gmarie Tue 25-Feb-20 23:35:42

I was just interacting with bikersgran on another thread and she seems very supportive, funny, and thoughtful!

Urmstongran Tue 25-Feb-20 23:27:23

Thanks Chewbacca for that. I totally agree with you about MissA.
?

What about:
Cunco
mrsmopp
Ilovecheese
or
bikersgran (sorry I can’t remember the number ...

Anyone care to post something nice about any of them?

P.s. thank you SO much to everyone who is contributing to this thread.

Can we give up being meanies for Lent?

Chewbacca Tue 25-Feb-20 19:06:36

I posted when this thread first started to say that MissAdventure is one of the funniest, quickest and sharp witted posters we have. She has a brilliant sense of humour and frequently makes me laugh out loud at her posts.

As for Marydoll, well, I've bent her ear with my woes on many an occassion and she still wants to be my pal! grin

Jane10 Tue 25-Feb-20 18:59:51

Me too MawB

MawB Tue 25-Feb-20 18:23:26

OK Jane10, I’m out.

Jane10 Tue 25-Feb-20 18:21:03

Och MawB we're all different on here. Some are sensitive and others, like myself, are obviously insensitive cows! There's room for all sorts.
Urmstongran made a brave effort with this thread but it's been slightly subverted by those of us who try not to take life or Internet forums too seriously.

MawB Tue 25-Feb-20 18:09:00

Well the comment by Jane10 - slagathon - really tickled me up?? I do love those posters with a sense of humour (and there are many) and those that don't take themselves too seriously!

The implication that those who have been upset must take themselves too seriously.

Jane10 Tue 25-Feb-20 17:34:51

Who said anything about SOH bypass? Who is being bullied? I'm naturally irreverent and some posters get that.

MawB Tue 25-Feb-20 17:23:17

Jane10 Tue 25-Feb-20 14:52:45
Now I’ve heard it all!

The proposed slagathon thread would be for those we simply can't be kind about
I find it hard to credit that anybody could (even in jest) propose subverting this kind thread in this way.
Well start your thread by all means, but you may not necessarily like what you read on it.
SOH bypass?
That is so often the type of response to “banter” which is no more or less than bullying.
