That's Nice or is it Marvellous, Brilliant, Kind, Comforting, Pretty ....?

I was taught, both at Primary and Secondary School , to eschew the use of the word Nice which was lazy and to seek a more precise/appropriate descriptive adjective. Consequently, every use of the word on Gransnet Forums, leaps out at me and makes my hackles rise. The only time I use the word is sarcastically, as in 'That was nice of her' when in fact is was rude, upsetting, or belittling.

Anyone else?

Goodness, I stopped worrying about what teacher would think about 40 years ago. smile Nice is a useful word, covers a lot of situations perfectly.

Most older people were told to use ‘nice’ sparingly when in school.....but so wot!
Nice had a different meaning two hundred years ago, but again...so wot!
It’s better than using OTT words to describe enjoying a scone and cuppa for instance.?

I'm not so much bothered by 'nice' but to my DGSs the only adjective is 'awesome' which drives me nuts!

BlueBelle Thu 20-Feb-20 15:53:54

Yes we too were to,d to not use nice as it was lazy and there were a lot better word I m sure I still use it though

Possibly, the sun has come out now, it’s stopped raining and it’s really quite , um, delightful.

Well, not delightful, what’s the word I’m looking for?

toscalily Thu 20-Feb-20 15:18:19

Must be the weather, I feel the same.

Oopsadaisy3 Thu 20-Feb-20 15:12:54

toscalily I’m normally a ‘nice’ person , but today I’m feeling a bit snippy.....

toscalily Thu 20-Feb-20 15:05:28

Pedants corner or not, that made me laugh Oopsadaisy3.

Oopsadaisy3 Thu 20-Feb-20 15:00:59

Sorry

Marvellous

Oopsadaisy3 Thu 20-Feb-20 15:00:05

Oops, thought I’d dropped into Pedants corner by mistake!

Still, nice to see that others have nothing better to do than correct our posts.

Purpledaffodil Nicely put, but it's not got that gets to me it's gotten grin

Yehbutnobut Thu 20-Feb-20 14:55:12

Haven’t you anything better to worry about such as sloppy punctuation and inappropriate use of capitals?

annep1 Thu 20-Feb-20 14:25:17

Nothing wrong with nice fgs. We were just taught not to use the same descriptive word repeatedly, and to think of others. The most repeatedly used word I remember was lovely.

Yiayia4 Thu 20-Feb-20 14:13:48

Does it matter!

SueDonim Thu 20-Feb-20 14:11:20

We could start using young people’s language and call things ‘sick’ when we like them. grin

Greta Thu 20-Feb-20 13:54:20

I can think of far worse crimes than using 'nice'. Sometimes it is just the most suitable word. Alternatives like "fantastic, amazing, marvellous" are much stronger. And of course, now we have 'awsome' which I have yet to use!

I guess teachers just want to extend pupils' vocabulary and that must be good.

SueDonim Thu 20-Feb-20 13:40:26

My school had the same rule. Nothing could be ‘nice’.

We weren’t allowed to use ‘got’ or ‘somebody’ (had to be some*one*).There was also some arcane rule about using ‘what’ in conjunction with another word - ‘what was’ maybe? hmm

GrandmaMoira Thu 20-Feb-20 13:21:23

I was also taught not to use nice if there is a better word but I agree with Calendargirl that people often use exaggerated words such as brilliant, awesome etc. for things that are quite ordinary and it irritates me. I'm happy to say nice.

Alishka Thu 20-Feb-20 12:52:34

Sorry, purpledaffodil got there before me (see what I did there?)

Alishka Thu 20-Feb-20 12:50:57

Nice? I think it's Absolutely Fabulous, Dahlingwink
Our English teacher's never-use word was 'got'.

Beechnut Thu 20-Feb-20 12:48:50

I was told those things about the word‘nice’. I’ve decided in a world where everything is ‘amazing’ (I have nothing against the use of) that there is nothing wrong with describing something as nice.

Calendargirl Thu 20-Feb-20 12:47:59

As others have said, I too was taught not to use nice if better words could be chosen.
I do use it however. What I object to are words such as brilliant, amazing, fantastic, awesome, and so on, being used completely out of context. Makes nice look quite harmless.
