Did you ever buy a Mary Quant dress?

I was watching the TVprogramme about the V&A museum (fascinating) One woman donated a 1960s Mary Quant dress. It cost 8 guineas when she bought it. Did you ever spend as much on a dress? I know I didn't. C&A was my shop of choice.

I absolutely loved Mary Quant and everything about her. I only managed to buy some make up and make up box with the white daisy on the black plastic covering.
I was a massive fan of Biba, though. I felt so posh and grown up, going to Church Street, Kensington, to the Biba boutique and buying her things. I had a rose pink maxi dress from there, with a zip down the front with a very large rounded edge collar. The other thing was a khaki green all in one, with bib and very long wide legs. Wore that with a gorgeous white blouse from Biba. I felt so good in that outfit! If only I had kept these these iconic garments.
I just ‘had’ to have the gorgeous Twiggy white broderie anglaise under the bust dress. Bless my lovely Dad for buying it for me!! All my friends loved me in too - that made me feel like a million dollars, as they liked it so much. I then gave it to my Sister in Law, who dyed it olive green!!! Not so sure about that, it had to be white. The 60’s were such wonderful days the for the fabulous fashion. We are so lucky now to have these memories of iconic designers and garments.

I couldn’t afford the real thing, but made my own copies. I had those white boot type things, that were a shoe with a sort of stretchy pvc leg part and a white pvc Mack which I loved. Think it may still be in the loft. I also had the hair cut.

I used to make my own clothes. I couldn't afford MQ. I had hipster skirts - very short.

I never had a Mary Quant dress but did have two copies. One was pretty much the same as janeainsworth's picture. It was block colours with black lines . I loved it and felt vey trendy. I didn't need to have the Mary Quant version and have never felt the need to buy designer clothes, but I do like to wear modern, trendy-ish stuff if I can.
I did buy a totally WHITE mini dress once and Mum was furious with me as she said it would always need washing and ironing. I said the shop assistant said it's
a new fabric called crimplene and won't ever need ironing. She was right and that dress has always been one of my favourites. Mum wore crimplene dresses for the rest of her life. Bless her.

Never had an MQ, but copied them often. I did buy Biba. I had a corn coloured PVC mac and white Lulu boots.

I recently bought a 60s inspired dress pattern, two tones, and intend to have a go.

I LOVE the V&A programme, the lady with the amazing saris on Thursday's progra me is a friend of mine. I have two beautiful saris that just lie in a draw, I'm thinking of using them for dresses, linings, cushions etc. They wouldn't be of interest to the museum.

No, but my partner at the time bought me a pyjama set of chiffon shorts and top, black and white zigzag.

My first Saturday job was in Chelsea girl. Never bought Mary quaint dress but I remember going to her shop in Kensington and buying false eyelashes.

Yes! I had a green, black & white dress & I was so proud of it.
I went to the exhibition at V&A & it was brilliant. Brought back many memories of London in 60s.
I would have been about 16 when I bought the dress & it took all my birthday money plus saving my pocket money & money I earned from working Saturdays in C&A- which was horrible in summer as the one huge changing room needed spraying with air freshener regularly as it got so smelly. Surely we had deodorants in those days.

Yes, it was black and white. It cost me nearly a weeks salary. My mum was horrified at my extravagance!

Aepgirl Sat 22-Feb-20 10:41:02

Yes, I had a black and white mini dress - pop art, and also a lovely blue and white pinstripe coat that buttoned at a mandarin collar, then the buttons continued all down the left hand side. I wonder where these went.

Yes, I had a black and white Mary Quant dress - it was a gift from an admirer. And I also had the Mary Quant hair cut!

My mum made most of my clothes on a Singer hand sewing machine. There were ‘Vogue’ patterns for Mary Quant dresses and she made me two . Reading through the posts I could visualise all those styles and the shops where I spent hours browsing. I had a great wave of nostalgia for those much simpler times. I went to college with two or three dresses, two skirts, a pair of trousers, two M&S jumpers - my favourites were men’s lambs wool ‘sloppy joes’, a blouse, a smart coat and a duffle coat. I went on the train with my stuff sent ahead in a trunk. Definitely not accompanied by my parents with a huge car-load of expensive possessions, as happens now!

I never had a real MQ dress but I did once have a Vidal Sassoon haircut - stupid as my hair was fair and curly (now grey and curly) which looked "with it" for about 24 hours.

I had a Ginger Nut dress somewhere in the mid 60s. I bought it for a wedding and wore it until it died ! I also remember spending an afternoon in Biba in Kensington High Street. I spent a whole afternoon in there sitting on the settees and chatting with friends and came out with a lipstick !

I was on a coach tour in Germany last year and on one visit to a town, while I went looking at churches and buildings two of the women went on a shopping spree-to C&A!
Thanks to everyone who posted. Lots of lovely memories of when we had the best clothes, the best hairstyles and the best make up.

My cousin was a Mary Quant model and she passed on loads of dresses to me . I was only 12 so don’t think I really Appreciated them at the time !

Lupin Sat 22-Feb-20 10:24:52

I can't recall having Mary Quant dresses but I had a Mary Quant hairstyle = a bob, shorter at the back and swinging forward along the jaw. I did have Dolly Rocker dresses, and kept them for years as a sentimental reminder of those times. My daughters wore them and some 70s clothes for fancy dress parties.

Kittye Sat 22-Feb-20 10:23:31

Couldn’t afford Mary Quant or Biba, more of a C&A girl.
Loved the fashions though ?

Maccyt1955 Sat 22-Feb-20 10:20:20

I was a bit too young for Mary Quant, but I did love Biba and loon pants that you could buy at Kensington Market.

My star buy that I have kept to this day, is a beautiful smock dress by Ozzie Clark which I used to wear with pink suede boots.

missdeke Sat 22-Feb-20 10:18:48

I never bought a Mary Quant dress, looking at the photos from the V&A exhibition, I now remember why. They weren't short enough!!! I mostly made my own then I could make them as short as I liked.

Quizzer Sat 22-Feb-20 10:12:55

I lived in London during the swinging 60s. Sadly I could never afford a Mary Quant dress but I was good at needlework and made myself almost exact copies . I wish I had kept them all even if it was just to show my granddaughters. I only kept one dress and that was my own design.

gillyknits Sat 22-Feb-20 10:10:27

I was a C&A girl too! I really missed them when they closed. I was really surprised to see a store in Spain when I was on holiday. It was still the same good value and I bought quite a few things there. Wish they’d come back.

SueLindsey Sat 22-Feb-20 10:08:21

Sadly I had totally the wrong body for the 1960s when I was a teenager. Enormous and very unfashionable boobs. I blame it on Twiggy!!

Rosina Sat 22-Feb-20 10:06:03

I had two of the genuine article and a few 'copies'. How I wish I had kept them! I was a tiny person them - also used to buy 'Junior Miss' clothes as they fitted perfectly and were ideal for the office. Oh, if only!

Sue500 Sat 22-Feb-20 10:05:23

No I didn’t but did go the exhibition at VA. It was brilliant and evoked so many memories of teenage years.
