Shrove Tuesday is over. Now it’s Lent.

Religious or not, denial and willpower is considered to be good for us!

Wednesday 26th February until Thursday 9 April.

Might you (a) be giving something up or (b) plan to add in some good deeds to your lifestyle?

I’m having a think about it tonight ....

Definitely not.

I see the Pope thinks we should stop being unkind to others on social media for Lent.
Does that mean we can go back to being unkind when Lent is over ?

I shall try to say the Stations of the Cross daily instead of giving anything up.

GracesGranMK3 Thu 27-Feb-20 07:49:33

No. Whether you are doing it as a Christian or not surely the point is to do it without the fanfare?

I give up buying any new toiletries during Lent, which helps makes me use up the collection of half used bottles of shampoo and shower gel etc cluttering my bathroom. Anything I really don't like by the end of Lent gets given away or disposed off, as part of the subsequent Spring clean, and I make a small donation based on the amount I' estimate I' ve not spent on toiletries to a favourite cause. If I feel I have been really successful, I then treat myself to a new bottle of my favourite but very expensive shampoo.

No I'm not giving anything up, I always fail and then feel worse than before.

Urmstongran did you decide what to give up?

Tommy16 Thu 27-Feb-20 00:00:12

DRINK!!

LancsLass, yes, Easter Sunday

Oh dear, I have been rather critical of others today (not anyone I know).

However, I think I will try to do something positive for charity each day rather than self-denial

Notsooldat75 Wed 26-Feb-20 21:14:22

I give up my new year resolutions.
Every year.

Iam64 Wed 26-Feb-20 21:02:58

Dot - is isn't mandatory to self deny, any more than it is to do an act of kindness each day. Many people use the discipline of Lent to try to do exactly that, to be more kind, generous and less critical of others.

DotMH1901 Wed 26-Feb-20 20:59:48

No - I have never really understood why self denial is such a big thing - pity that it wasn't mandatory to do an act of kindness each day instead!!

Iam64 Wed 26-Feb-20 19:58:02

I will try not to curse, especially at the continuing cold, wet and grey weather.

I will reflect on what I can do to support others, especially the homeless.

Faith is something I rarely talk about. I always try not to dismiss the faith others hold dear.

I thought Lent only ended on Easter Sunday not Good Friday.
I am hoping to give up chocolate, biscuits (love the broken ones one buys in boxes) and alcohol.

My Good Captain and I have decided that we are giving up sex for Lent. Not that we can really remember what that is because our memories don't go back that far, but it sounds good, doesn't it and will be easier to give up than chocolate or beer. ??

GrannyBe Wed 26-Feb-20 18:33:39

I give up wine and chocolate every year! I think it’s a good discipline and a few kilos get dropped ready for the summer! I am not particularly religious! And it’s really hard for the first few days!

grannyactivist Wed 26-Feb-20 18:16:57

Lioness68 the charities you mention are ones that are also close to my own heart.

I wonder though, what your experience is of people who use food banks. You are perhaps unaware that sometimes people get into difficult financial situations not through a lack of thrift, but because their circumstances are very straitened.

If you click here and scroll down to Mon 24-Feb-20 20:25:17 I have given an example of this.

As a Chrisian I do observe Lent. This year I'm interested in the idea of doing/giving up something to help environmentally.
First Day of Lent
Give up something to help the environment.
During Lent we remember that Jesus spent 40 days going without food and comfort in the wilderness.
Could you give up something this Lent that would save electricity, plastic, waste or water? Choose something to give up eating, buying or using this Lent that will help you care for creation.

Yours truly has given up chocolate for Lent. Partly because I have a Christian faith and partly because I would like to lose some wobble.

Like another GN poster, in 2001 I gave up meat for lent. I felt so much better in all ways that have been a vegetarian ever since.

I would never try to push my faith or ideas on others. Each to their own.

Lioness68 Wed 26-Feb-20 16:50:27

No, I am an atheist. I donate to my charities of choice (mostly service or veterans) throughout the year. I disagree with food banks, the people who use them need to prioritise their spending. I also support Mary's Meals. they really do help those who are starving.

mrscake1 Wed 26-Feb-20 16:27:17

Not giving up anything but going to give something away until the end of lent.

Soozikinzi Wed 26-Feb-20 15:55:48

Yes chocolate but I am not religious at all I think religion has caused most of the wars in the world. I’m giving up chocolate because I’m fat !

Graygirl - My admiration to you. I'm doing my best to cut down and moderate just now. Having Lent as a sort-of framework will help, I think, with trying to change my rather bad wine habit.

MayDay50 Wed 26-Feb-20 15:17:23

I'll be trying (and failing) to give up gin grin

Callistemon Wed 26-Feb-20 15:12:33

Shirls can we count the 4 items DH took to the charity shop on Tuesday, plus one piece of furniture.
It was the day before Lent but can that count as 5 days?

SalsaQueen Wed 26-Feb-20 14:46:42

No, nothing.
