Panic buying

An online supermarket has warned that they are experiencing higher than normal buying levels. Obviously people are panic buying in anticipation of global collapse. I wasn’t going to but if everyone else is stocking up/hoarding then there won’t be much left for me. So now I’m going to hoard food, medicine, toilet rolls, pet food and so on, which will then cause more shortages so you will have to hoard too. The world has gone nuts! ?

And plenty of long life milk too (I usually put some into the food bank).

Sad to say, there’s been panic buying in my local Asda. No dry pasta at all! Ditto long life milk and paracetamol.
I forgot to check the loo roll aisle, since we didn’t need any.

Are people staying at home now? Went to an NT place today, its a beautiful day, especially after yesterday. Its not a house just somewhere to have a walk and a cake. Almost no one there, didn't expect hordes but it was almost deserted.

How ridiculous ... shame on them and anyone who joins them.

Quite looking forward to finally run everything down and use up every little bit of stuff I have here.

There was plenty of soap in non-supermarket shops yesterday; we needed some anyway.
TK Maxx for nice soap for the shower, The Range and B&M had 'ordinary' soap.

Calendargirl Fri 06-Mar-20 16:12:08

I bet that once some people get the soap home, they won’t actually use it any more than they did before. But it will be a security blanket knowing it’s there.

Absolutely not just buying my usual what is really interesting is what did everyone use to wash there hands before this virus I for one have always gor soap in bathroom and kitchen no need to rush out and buy more

endlessstrife Fri 06-Mar-20 16:07:15

I’ve just been to my local Sainsbury’s. There’s not any soap at all! It was the same on Tuesday. I spoke to the lady on the till, and she said some came in yesterday, and people were queueing down the aisles with it! So what happens to the rest of us, who are not panicking, but need soap for when they do a poo, or for anything else for that matter?? There’s going to be more of a problem than the corona virus, when nasty bacteria start propagating. Surely shops should be rationing these items. I was pleased to find there were plenty of my favourite chocolates, and they were on offer?

I just got a small Sainsbury delivery. The driver said he has 16 crates for one customer. Another customer, a doctor interestingly (not sure he should have told me but no name) bought 30 packets of weetabix. I am now a bit worried about shops running out of stuff.

We did notice people buying packs of bottled water too. But why water I'm sure we could manage with tap water?

Fiachna50 Fri 06-Mar-20 00:35:30

No bread or longlife milk. There was toilet roll. You could also buy Thins, bagels or rolls. Plenty fresh produce. Im not buying bottled water, I did buy a large bottle of diluting juice. What did annoy me, no Galaxy Counters anywhere. Are folk stockpiling those too?

rosecarmel Thu 05-Mar-20 23:30:35

And yet, I'm guessing, due to the reduction of people out shopping, items are very neatly lined up on the shelves, produce perfectly piled into pyramids .. Very strange ..

Desdemona Thu 05-Mar-20 22:51:29

No hand sanitiser, toilet roll or tinned potatoes in the supermarket this evening.

Hetty58 Thu 05-Mar-20 22:36:43

Lemongrove, when you've cleaned out all the wardrobes and washed the windows, there's plenty more here!

Now that I know what a velcro roller is - I might use extra time to style my hair!

Why are people stockpiling loo rolls? Food I can understand, but should (oh, horror of horrors) we run out of loo roll, there's bucket loads of paper in the house (newspaper, printer paper, paperbacks) - so we'd manage.

Charleygirl5 Thu 05-Mar-20 21:33:47

I went to my local Waitrose today and the loo and kitchen roll aisle had many large gaps. Hand gel was non existent. All I bought was a loaf of bread and tomatoes. Bottled water was also leaving the shelves rapidly.

rosecarmel Thu 05-Mar-20 21:22:19

It's probably already been mentioned upthread, but it made me laugh when I heard about this hashtag:

#toiletpaperapocalypse

Some very funny stories about toilet paper on the radio today from a reporter in Australia-

Callistemon Wed 04-Mar-20 22:56:09

lemongrove I spotted a very large black spider in the hall the other night, DH had already gone up to bed, we had locked up so I left it where it was.
No doubt it is busy somewhere festooning the house with cobwebs.

merlotgran Wed 04-Mar-20 22:06:25

Good thinking, May7. wink

May7 Wed 04-Mar-20 22:04:29

If I was you merlotgran I would sell them on ebay because they seem to be as rare as hens teeth

merlotgran Wed 04-Mar-20 22:02:45

I still have some Velcro rollers from the 1980s. There must be some way I can upcycle them now that my hair is no longer long enough to need them.

Maybe getting dog's hairs off the sofa?

Or even keeping the dog off?

lemongrove Wed 04-Mar-20 21:54:28

Callistemon.....there may be the odd cobweb here and there
But if spotted will soon be zapped.?
With all that self isolating time on my hands I could sort loads of photographs ( currently shoved in a drawer) into a new albumn, clean out all the wardrobes and definitely wash the windows.?

Callistemon Wed 04-Mar-20 21:53:05

Perhaps that woman in Merlots link has bought up the world supply of velcro rollers!

lemongrove Wed 04-Mar-20 21:46:19

It’s daft to start panic buying anything.
My online shopping arrived as usual the other day, and in Sainsbury today for a few items of toiletries, the only half empty shelves were for handwash and bars of soap!
There are going to be some cleaner hands around than normal it seems.

May7 Wed 04-Mar-20 21:39:49

Well hetty58 they are sticky curlers that you put in your barnet. I always thought you could buy them at the chemist but it appears they are as unavailable as hand gel

Hetty58 Wed 04-Mar-20 20:57:50

What's a velcro roller?
