Do you dye your locks,

I've had similar experiences. Last attempt at salon colour my forehead swelled up so much my son said I looked like a 'Klingon' from Star Trek and would frighten small children. Also my head was so inflamed, die and itchy... It was really horrific. In recent times I've been using off the shelf permanent colours myself. As long as I take extra antihistamine tabs ( I'm on those all year round) the day before and after, I don't get any reaction. I'm 64.

I'm 65 and have never dyed my hair at all. It is still dark brown with no grey. In fact it is only a very few years since I realised that every one of my colleagues dyed their hair. Most of them had started going grey in their 30s. I do sometimes envy them when they turn up with different colours.

At 72 I have stopped having my hair coloured. I am allowing the colour to grow out. As a younger person, I used to colour my hair at home, but I struggle to see now (I have limited sight in one eye only) and the hairdresser costs were getting a bit much (over £50). I am hoping it won't be too much longer before it's all grey. My natural colour is dark brown, and unfortunately, my natural colour still shows all around the edges, and only the top and back of my hair is silver grey! Sigh!

I developed vitiligo following a streptococcal infection and have gradually lost almost all the pigment in my skin, eyebrows and lashes, and my hair over the last 20 years or so! Gave up dying my hair about 7 years ago as it did not last very long, so now have short white hair. My AC tell me it suits me - which is just as well!!

Just started going grey at 59 and I shan`t be dying my hair.

I've been all most shades of red/brown and even platinum blonde which didn't suit as I have pale skin, blue eyes and don't wear make-up so kind of 'disappeared'.
Someone at the time asked if I was unwell.
Been dying my hair at home and at hairdressers since I was 16 and used to model hairstyles twice a week for a local salon in Maghull who took photos for their magazine.
At present it's dark quartz with copper flashes through the top and sides. Kind of longish tousled/messy on top with waxy stuff and undercut into the neck at the back.
Salons are expensive. Mine's about £85 for blow and half head of flashes so I only go every 6 weeks and do it myself between visits.
Grey just wouldn't suit me.

I've been dying my hair blonde for many years and I'm not really sure what colour it would be if I stopped doing it. However, I used to lighten my hair as I was a darkish blonde naturally but now I darken it to medium blonde to cover up grey/white roots. I've no intention of letting my hair go completely white. I do my roots at home every 6-8 weeks, all done in less than an hour. Easy.

ainsse. There are lots of purple shampoos which are made to enhance grey/silver hair. Prices vary massively. I bought one in Aldi which cost a couple of pounds and have also used White hot heat which is around £12 a tube. The latter also do a swooshing cream which works well for my short hair.

I color my hair and add highlights. The color is always some kind of red brown with gold highlights. The shades depend on the time of year. I go back and forth between going natural and continuing to color. My hair dresser says she doesn't think I'm ready to go natural yet (we've been togther since August 1991 so she knows me well).

I do like the idea someone posted about using semi-permanent hair color until all the gray grows out and then letting it go to it's natural state. I'm just not sure I have the courage to do that yet.

I do have hope because my mother and grandmother both had silver in the front but stayed their natural color in the back.

I've never dyed my hair and at 65 I have the same midbrown colour I had as a child with about 3 grey hairs in it

I’m nearly 67 and have pink streaks in my hair. Don’t think it matters what age you are, if you want to colour your hair just do it
Feel like it’s a second childhood, certainly wouldn’t have been allowed pink hair as a teenager ?

I still have my hair dyed at the hairdressers but my wonderful hairdresser is very good and puts lowlights in to lift the colour a bit and I have the odd streaks of caramel and dark blond put in as summer approaches. It then doesn't have that block colour look which I think can be aging especially against a completion that is 65+. This is my only high maintenance treat. I don't have manicures or pedicures. When I ask my DH if he thinks I should stop dying my hair he always says it's up to me and he just wants me to do what makes me happy! Sitting on the fence a bit me thinks but understandable.

I’ve never dyed my hair, but then it’s not really grey yet, and I’ve just had my 80th birthday. It’s brown, has some grey in it but the overall effect is still brown. My son (45) says he has more grey than I have, and I think he’s right! I get no credit for it generally, because everyone thinks I dye it. If I had gone grey at 35, like my sister in law, I think I’d have dyed it - or rather, paid a good hairdresser to do it for me.

I have inherited the not-going-grey gene from my father, whose almost black hair was still not completely grey when he died at the age of 94.

I see so many people whose dyed hair ages them, but since they don’t realise it they are quite happy.

My hair was very dark when I was younger.Started to get white hairs at 16,used a semi permanent for years,then henna for a while until the white started to go orange,so back to semi permanents for a few years but my hair grows so fast was having to do the roots almost every week. Went to the hairdresser and had some blonde and red streaks put in,then gradually increased the amount of blonde until that became my overall colour.Then started to use lots of funky colours but now I tend to stick to bright pink.

I don't dye my hair, it's naturally mid brown with quite a lot of grey which doesn't bother me. In the 80s it was streaked with blonde or burgundy which I liked at the time.

Wash through a henna cream once a week which covers the grey in my salt and pepper hair and keeps it the copper red I was born with. Not sure when or if I will give up!

I use a lighter colour than my original colour, just to warm it up a bit, you can see it when it starts growing out but it's not that obvioius, I'd not want to have to do roots regularly. I hope to go lighter and lighter as I go greyer, if I start going really gray rather than just boring scattering of grey hairs I'll rethink. I know someone who went subtle blonde, which looks good. I think going too dark is dreadfully aging, and the roots look so obvioius. I don't like burgundy/maroon either on me, it looks great on younger women but I think once you start wrinkling up it looks aging.

Recently I was sitting in a big circle of older ladies, and was really looking at their hair and colours worn etc. I have been trying to decide whether to let my originally dark brown hair go grey.

To be honest, the majority with grey hair did look older, and quite faded somehow. I think if you are lucky and your hair is a bright silver or white all over, AND is smooth and straight and healthy, yes you can look great.

Sadly my hair would be a mix of dark brown, faded brown and silver, thick, wavy, not a great look.

Some of the ladies would have looked much better with a bright jewel colour near their face.

I suppose if any of us are going to shut ourselves away, now would be a good time to ditch the colour. When this is all over we could metamorphosise into a silver haired funky lady.

I remember when I was a child how the "old women" used to mention a 'blue rinse'......for some reason the other day that came into my mind. Anyway I am now wondering if nowadays, you can buy a 'coloured rinse' ? Something you just add in with your shampoo??

It would just be great if you could enhance the colour of your light grey hair but by just 'shampooing' it in, as opposed to having to do the roots by roots procedure. Does anyone know if such a product exists? ps I am disabled so cant go pottering around the shops and if I google something like that ..then so much stuff comes up that I am utterly confused.

I’m 60 and dye my hair it a natural mid brown but I have to admit it was really dark anyway. My dad was 73 when he died and had still a full head of jet black hair! I will dye till I die!

Just looked back a little more closely at some of the comments, in particular the rather scathing ones about grey hair being aging and adding ten years. I wholeheartedly disagree! It may do if you have an old fashioned style and wear frumpy clothes but with an edgy modern cut and up to date clothes, you can look just as good if not better than someone with the ubiquitous ash blond dye which, let's face it, just looks fake.

I'm 61 and stopped dying my hair about 5 years ago. I'd always vowed I'd have red hair til I died but got fed up with the process. It is now silver grey & looks so much better. I have a short, choppy cut every 4 weeks & everyone seems to like it including me.

I now use L'Oréal 7.3 or anything on offer
It suits my colouring and I'm happy not to be salt and pepper badger effect...

I’ve died mine blonde for years and have no intention of stopping. Gets expensive though but I’ve never had much luck doing it myself.

I am 71 and have long dark brown hair that I have never dyed in any way. But, since my OH died, I have noticed quite a bit of grey creeping in for the first time. Once it spreads further I plan to dye my hair light pink in the hope that the grey strands will pick up the colour, but the rest will stay the same - brown hair with pink streaks is what I am after.
