Do you dye your locks,

I'm 65 and have never dyed my hair at all. It is still dark brown with no grey. In fact it is only a very few years since I realised that every one of my colleagues dyed their hair. Most of them had started going grey in their 30s. I do sometimes envy them when they turn up with different colours.

I've had similar experiences. Last attempt at salon colour my forehead swelled up so much my son said I looked like a 'Klingon' from Star Trek and would frighten small children. Also my head was so inflamed, die and itchy... It was really horrific. In recent times I've been using off the shelf permanent colours myself. As long as I take extra antihistamine tabs ( I'm on those all year round) the day before and after, I don't get any reaction. I'm 64.

My hair was naturally reddish light brown, I have the roots done every 5 ish weeks to keep it that way. I am not ready to go grey at 68, it wouldn't suit me and would make me feel old . I don't find it a chore to have it done in fact I quite enjoy it.

I no longer dye my hair, decided it was no good trying to look youthful when my body told another story!!

I had my last colour more than two years ago, now grey and proud of it! Should have done it years ago.

Older ladies (or men) shouldn't dye their hair black or dark brown - it just looks so artificial. Whether you stay grey or not often depends on your original colour. Dark haired, olive skinned people often go that lovely silver grey colour which is so flattering. Mousy haired fair-skinned souls like me just go more mousy. I will dye mine until I am too old to do it myself!

Dyed my hair from my late 20's. I'm 66 now. Originally a light brown then lighter and lighter blond. Eventually my silver hair growing through hardly showed so I decided to grow everything out and love it. I don't think I look any older as lots of young women choose silver blonde now

No I don’t- i did but got fed up with the hassle, now feel very liberated at 63!!!

Absolutely - dark blonde with lighter highlights. I have pale skin and with brown eyes so I need a bit of colour on top of the grey to stop me looking like a corpse.

I'm 63. I dye my hair, or rather my hairdresser dyes it for me. I have dye on my roots and highlights in the rest of my hair. I ask her to make it as natural as possible and I have a lighter dye now than when I was older.

Still have my roots done every 6 weeks I’m dark brown and no where near ready to be grey. I’m 63 going on 43

Canadian Gran - 60 is far too young to stop colouring. I don't think I ever will. The colour, not only makes my hair look brighter, but gives it volume. I always know when my hair needs doing, not only by the colour, but because it just hangs! I love my hairdresser!

I'm with you Patsy429 . I've been colouring my hair since I was 16, some disasters over the years but thankfully I still have a good head of hair at 62yrs. I love my weekly visit/pampering session to my hairdressers and the craic is great too!! I come out rejuvenated,

I dye my hair I have done for years I am not ready to go grey yet.

Been dying my hair for about ten years since I was 55. Usually a dark blonde. When I was at work I had it done at the hairdressers at vast expense - an overall dark blonde with lowlights and highlights using foils. It looked lovely, but once I was living on a pension I decided I couldnt justify the cost and began doing it myself. Now I do an all over colour about every four to six months and use L'Oreal root touch up in between. It looks pretty good and when I decided to get a cut, my new hairdresser couldnt believe I was doing it all myself. I certainly dont think I am too old to dye my hair and have no intention of stopping. My next door neighbour is 92 and only stopped about six months ago when she found she couldnt lift her arms up high enough to apply the colour to her roots.

I've been 'dyeing' my hair since I was 14! No idea what actual colour it would be now tbh. I started lightening when I was at school without my parents' knowledge. Never stopped with the N and E*sy. It sure has been easy for me. Even many hairdressers have complimented on me being able to colour my own. I do vary it a bit and have gone from dark to blonde and back again many times.

Gave up about 3 years ago - got fed up with the tyranny of regular appointments to touch up the roots and have never done my own colour! Much better and have had compliments on my natural colour

I used to have fine straight, light brown hair which I had highlighted and cut into a longish bob. Last year I had to have chemo and my hair has grown back with a slight kink which gives it body it never had before, and dark grey with light grey flashes at the front. I like it and am going to keep it short. Am so pleased not to be a slave to my roots any more.

I have never dyed my hair, bu I’m wondering whether to start, just to even out the colour. The front is silvery-grey, but the back is still quite dark. My Mum’s was a lovely silver, all over, by the time she was in her sixties. I’m now 80, and wondering if mine will ever finish the job of going grey.
Should I take the plunge and have it dyed?

Tbh if anything teaches us anything is that you are never too old for anything. Lifes is too short, do what makes you happy, wanna go grey, do it with style, wanna go pink, do it! I went for a dark red and I love it, and will continue to home dye my hair for as long as the arthritis allows me! lol. Hair is thinner now than it was, but the colour took well and actually gave me some body back! x

I always used to dye it myself as the cost of a hairdresser was ridiculous.
I cut mine & others too.

My hair is a bit dark for my skin now. I am thinking, if I am shut at home, shall I try using that colour stripper to remove the dark brown years of dye? I understand it is a bit of a palaver and stinks. I have no idea what I'd be left with. Some faded brown, some grey/white. Sounds delightful .

But then I could try a light brown/dark blond semi, or even some highlights. If it went wrong, I'd have time to get it sorted before I had to appear in public again.

Unless I’d been in the sun a lot I was a natural darkish blonde, which started going darker maybe 10 years ago. Instead of expensive highlights to perk it up I started using a John Frieda spray which goes on wet hair before drying. No obviously darker roots even if I forget for a while. That spray is brilliant but I think my hairdresser was a bit miffed that I wasn’t having highlights done any more.

Hair has gradually got lighter, but still not grey, just lighter mousy. I suspect I take after my mother, who still wasn’t properly grey when she died at 97. (She’d been what they used to call a strawberry blonde.). It caused a row with a neighbour when she was 80-ish - neighbour refused to believe she didn’t dye it and accused her of lying!

It's lovely to be free from colouring! How I hated that grey patch on the crown that reappeared so quickly and how nice to have different shades of grey rather than a block look.

Framilode: Are you taking Apixaban by any chance. I take it and it gives me a horrible itchy rash which pops up in different places all over my body. Perhaps it isn’t he hair dye giving you the itch.
