The silver lining... Plusses from the 'panic'

Lots of people are cleaning like they never have before.

The shops are peaceful.

People are not spluttering in public.

People smile and nod as a greeting (not the grubby grab).

My silver lining is I actually found a car parking space in the hospital today. It was right near the virus testing portakabins. Usually takes me about 30mins to find a space. I then used sanitizer gel going in and on my way out. I have not seen hand gel for the last 3 weeks and I dont have any anyway. Our local pharmacy isnt selling the bottles but if you present with an old bottle they will fill it for you for £1. Fair enough if it stops people stock piling it. Quite a pragmatic approach I think

I will be interested to see how tomorrow goes, Im back in work at the checkout in my local supermarket, not been in work for nearly 10 days so.....we shall see what the real story is as to panic buying hmm

Chewbacca Thu 12-Mar-20 19:13:20

My silverlining: I didn't have to trek to the GP surgery today, find a parking space and then sit in a waiting room. Instead the GP phoned me and I had a consultation from the comfort of my armchair.

No it isn’t kitty - but neither is posting your thanks for trivia. Perhaps I take a more pragmatic view - good that so many of are doing that.

Well posted knittynatter these are for you thankswinecupcake

Eglantine21 Thu 12-Mar-20 18:46:33

I hope I made it clear Gabriella that having lots of stocks of things is his way of life.

Indeed most of that came from his previous flat and moved with him ?

One bar of soap has a label that says 11p.........

Knittynatter Thu 12-Mar-20 18:39:58

I’ve just got home from another day working for the NHS and I think it does no end of good to stop and think a while about any silver lining that we can find. Be careful, but don’t be gloomy because that isn’t going to change a thing. thanks

SirChenjin Thu 12-Mar-20 18:34:30

I’ve just got home from another day working for the NHS. I’m glad you’re finding trivia to be positive about - it puts everything into context <sarcasm alert>.

GabriellaG54 Thu 12-Mar-20 18:31:53

Unbelievable!!
Truly unbelievable, are the crassly selfish but more importantly, the ridiculous quantities of daft items people are hoarding.
Who needs shed loads of loo roll if there is less food to buy and anyway, we make it IN BRITAIN.
Who needs vast quantities of washing up liquid or dishwasher tabs?
Are you going to be using more dishes?
Utterly daft quantities of hard soap squirreled away and real fights over hand-wash/gel and other 'must have' commodoties.
Anyone who goes to those lengths is without doubt, totally mad and that's being polite.

Well done sandelf for starting a positive thread.

Both my sons in Australia are texting , or facetiming much more often [almost daily] and I am getting more frequent photos of small DGG. This is a very welcome outcome, but sadly it doesn't really make up for the fact that I shall not be seeing them as expected in April. Like Lucca, it's been over a year but long haul with a 2 yr old simply isn't going to happen .
So I'll do more complicated knitting and plan for the next visit !

Jomarie Thu 12-Mar-20 17:14:25

Oh well done sandelf there is so much doom and gloom (rightly so of course) but it is refreshing to lighten the load a little - even if not everyone agrees - well, you can't please everyone all of the time. I too think it is about time someone came up with some good stats re recoveries made - even if just to encourage all of us to continue with the good hygiene work,

Greymar Thu 12-Mar-20 15:14:59

sandelf, a brave attempt. I suppose it may mean less pointless running around. How on earth willl those with non IT based jobs manage? They must be so worried.

Esther1 Thu 12-Mar-20 15:00:20

Nobody is playing down how serious this Coronavirus is, but to look for some good .... the antibacterial sprays actually being used at the gym instead of being ignored, and everyone simply washing their hands more, and more thoroughly. These habits need to stay with us.

rockgran Thu 12-Mar-20 14:50:56

I have a good excuse not to book any holidays - I don't really like holidays but my husband does.

travelsafar Thu 12-Mar-20 14:46:27

May7 me too . As my DH has COPD i would be interested to hear if anyone with this complaint has survived and if it has left any lasting damage to their lungs over and above what they already have.

May7 Thu 12-Mar-20 14:42:50

I think it's good to have some lighthearted postings Sandself you've nothing to apologise for IMO

Has anyone spoken to or heard of anyone who has recovered from this disease? We hear about the deaths on the news all the time but I havent heard from anyone who has endured it? I know there must be many.

I would be interested to know if someone had had mild symptoms and come through it?

Eglantine21 Thu 12-Mar-20 14:42:28

Oh it’s the way GN is at the moment.

If I posted that I saw a rabbit in the garden someone would immediately post back saying what did I think I was doing and that rabbits are entitled to privacy!

sandelf Thu 12-Mar-20 14:20:23

Sorry to have upset people. I really do know there are horrible consequences too. Just was trying to see some possible benefits.

AllTheLs Thu 12-Mar-20 14:14:02

Brexit pales into insignificance, now, doesn't it. Anybody else feel a bit embarrassed about all the fuss made about it?

Anyway, the benefits: I'm keeping my fingers crossed that China really does stop its wildlife trading when this is over. They are driving endangered animals into extinction. When they realise that certain animal products aren't going to cure all their ills, and may just do the opposite, some of the animals may get a well needed reprieve.

Witzend Thu 12-Mar-20 14:06:45

It certainly makes a change from the endless, endless bloody Brexit on the news!

Charleygirl5 Thu 12-Mar-20 13:48:34

Eglantine a good job I do not live with "him indoors"- there would not be much space for us because I am also a hoarder but he does take the biscuit.

I only drink M&S coffee and always buy in bulk so for me buying 8 large jars last weekend was normal. The only thing I may run out of is bread.

Callistemon Thu 12-Mar-20 13:40:37

Washing up liquid!
Thanks, Eglantine I will add it to my list.

Should we go shopping?

Eglantine21 Thu 12-Mar-20 13:35:19

For the first time since we moved in together I am not moaning at the lover for his long term habit of obsessively hoarding stocks of everything!

Suddenly the twelve tubes of toothpaste, six bottles of washing up liquid, twenty-two (I kid you not) bars of soap and, glory be, the four giant packs of toilet rolls seem like a really good thing?

EllanVannin Thu 12-Mar-20 13:31:10

I remain thankful that my family came from Australia to visit last summer for possibly the last time that I'll see them.
