When I wasn't well as a young child, many, many moons ago, my mother's first treatment for me was Langdale's Essence of Cinnamon in hot milk, followed by a bowl of bread and milk---crustless white bread, well buttered, cut in little cubes, boiling milk poured over it and liberally sprinkled with demerara sugar. I still like it today.

I remember enjoying being ill as I was allowed to be in my parents bed and a fire was lit in the bedroom. At night my mum would sleep with me and my dad complained as he had to sleep in my little bed.
Like everyone else I always had lucozade when ill but never at other times. Half an aspirin was crushed between two spoons and mixed with ham in a sandwich as it was the only way I’d eat one. I also remember having sugar and butter mixed up to soothe sore throats (I loved that.) but I hated the dark chocolate ex lax which I seemed to have frequently (I must have had a problem!) and it put me off dark chocolate for many years. Calamine lotion of course for sunburn every summer it seems. And a cod liver oil capsule every day.
Incidentally you can still get germoline - I have some .

I will never forget that teaspoon of butter, sugar, and vinegar for a sore throat. When I was ill my mum always bought me a dot to dot book and a lucozade.

Milk of Magnesia for upset tummy and rosehip syrup every night before bed. Not sure why ?

JaneJANE60 Sat 14-Mar-20 09:26:14

I remember Dr Collis Brown cough mixture (spelling might not be quite right)

Aepgirl Sat 14-Mar-20 09:24:44

Cod liver oil and malt, Virol, Dr Collis Browns (for upset stomach’s), Gees Linctus for coughs. Liquafruta, for catarrh.

Kaolin poultice for boils
Golden eye ointment for sty’s
Rosehip syrup
TCP, which I still use to this day.
Junior disprin dissolved in water
Hot water bottle
Craved Lucozade but my mum said “too expensive”
Tea with lots of sugar
Germolene cream for cuts and scrapes
Calamine lotion
Milk of Magnesia

Iodine on cuts and grazes - ouch!
Bread poultices when I had mumps
Could not keep cod liver oil down (still can’t stand the smell) so was given cod liver oil of malt, which I loved.

My father was a great believer in TCP,good for gargling and dabbling on any other problem! I remember Andrew's liver salts but not sure what they were for?. My favourite were the Haliborange vitamin C supplements,so orangey! Oddly I can remember the smell of Bob Martin's,although they were for the dog not me!

Well the honest answer would be, ‘benign neglect’. grin
As a child I got really bad tonsillitis frequently and my mother always reacted as if I was ill just to annoy her, she described me as a @*&*# nuisance because she had to call the doctor out. I was simply packed off to bed with a cup of cold water and left to get on with it. Because my throat was too sore for me to swallow my mum would bring me a cup of oxo at dinner time, with some dry bread to dip in it, and for my tea it would be half a tin of Heinz tomato soup. Apart from delivering my food I was completely ignored all day long......until the doctor arrived and my mum would act as if she’d never left my side. I took huge amounts of penicillin when I was a child as I got so many infections. (No change there then!)

I was fit and healthy but very skinny. My mum ordered gold top milk for me and insisted I had some disgusting iron medicine. When my gran took me to stay with her sister they gave me warm goats milk to fatten me up. It took thirty years but eventually did the trick. hmm The second time she took me my older brother told me to find somewhere to get rid of it. I chose a potted plant on the landing. My gran and great aunt spent the next week trying to track down the dreadful smell.

My mother’s medicine of choice was Boots Influenza Mixture - clear liquid and foul tasting. Her theory seemed to be that nasty tasting medicine worked much better.

Indian Brandee for a tummy upset and if we had a cold mum rubbed us with Vick.

Txquiltz Fri 13-Mar-20 20:46:19

Xymalixir was the product of cruel witches living deep in forests. It was foisted twice a day on me following a major infection. It actually had a green sheen floating on the surface!

I wonder if you inhaled the fumes from the onion and that helped to clear your chest. There must be substance in some of these old remedies.

Callistemon Fri 13-Mar-20 20:30:59

Clever mother, M0nica - the honeycomb

I did the same for DD but that was years later and better known by then.

chicken Fri 13-Mar-20 20:15:38

My Granny's remedy for a chesty cough was a boiled onion bandaged onto the chest as a poultice.

My elder brother had scarlet fever and was nursed in an isolation hospital. The thing that made the most impression on him was that tapioca pudding was prominent in his diet there. When he came home, he begged Mum " Please don't give me shiny pudding". She didn't know what he meant until she actually dished some up and it was greeted with screams.

I had hay fever as a young child (in the 1960's) and my mother used to buy me honey on the comb from a local health food shop. We also used to be given Rose hip syrup (which I loved) and Angiers junior aspirin and Vicks on our chests for colds and olive oil in our ears for earache.

boheminan Fri 13-Mar-20 20:01:37

(Minadex seems to be like Marmite)grin

Franbern Fri 13-Mar-20 19:09:14

Home made chicken soup with lockshen (the jewish penicillan!!). Also gave this to my children and to this day if anyone isn't too well in the family, they will suggest 'some nice soup and nice bread' (chola).
For keeping me awake at night coughs, my father used to warm a cup of full fat milk with a dab of butter in it, fed to me by him teaspoon by teaspoon. The TLC was as important as the drink.
For coughs he also used to make a concoction of a cut up onion with brown sugar - leave for about 24 hours and the evil smelling liquid that came off it we had to drink. Smell of it would cure any cough

Humbertbear Fri 13-Mar-20 18:59:43

My mother used to put a warm kaolin poultice round my neck when I had tonsillitis

Sparklefizz Fri 13-Mar-20 18:53:03

So many wonderful brand names from the past which I had long forgotten - Parrish's Food which was equally as vile as Minadex, Virol which we all seemed to love (very sweet), Rose Hip Syrup (also sweet), Friar's Balsam in hot water with a towel over my head to steam for a cold/blocked nose.

Olive oil from a tiny bottle from the chemist, warmed and poured into my ears and then stopped up with cotton wool. To this day I can't bear anything in my ears, eg. water.

When my 2nd teeth came through and my mouth was over-crowded, I needed 2 teeth out. The school dentist asked my Mum "Gas or Cocaine?"

"Oh Cocaine please" said my Mum, cheerfully agreeing on my behalf as a 10 year old.

So we had Morphine in our Kaolin & Morphine, Cocaine at the dentist and various other potions and ointments which contained noxious substances .... yet we survived! (Perhaps our liberty bodices helped??)

Vampirequeen How dreadful!!!! shock

vampirequeen Fri 13-Mar-20 18:00:26

My mam caught scarlet fever and was sent to the fever hospital which was miles away from the city. No visitors were allowed. Each child was allocated a number and the parents had to look in the local paper on a Friday evening. They would look for their child's number to see if they were recovering. Horrifically it was also the way parents found out if their child had died.

Thingmajig Fri 13-Mar-20 17:58:34

Thankfully we were all hale and hearty as kids as the mother dished out Milk of Magnesia if we dared be ill! When we got older, maybe high school age, it got a bit better as we were given Alka Seltzer. Didn't matter what was actually wrong with you, these were our only remedies!!! grin

sodapop Fri 13-Mar-20 17:45:55

Yes that happened to me as well Fennel even the wallpaper was stripped from my bedroom when I recovered. I was an only child so able to stay at home.
