To use estate agent parlance "What do you call your main reception room?"

Is it your lounge, parlour, living room or something else?

I have a living room.

Poppsbaggie, why shouldn’t we have a light hearted thread? Of course there are more important things to think about, but not to the exclusion of a bit of light hearted banter.

Living room, although a lot of people here in Yorkshire, call it the lounge.

My grandparents known as Nan and Grandad lived in a 'posh' council house with front parlour, sitting room, kitchen, pantry and scullery. My Aunt lived in the next street, thought to be less 'posh' and had a kitchen, where they had a 3 piece suite and a back kitchen where they ate tea in the evening. My parents bought their own brand new semi in the suburbs, my mum was very proud of her lounge with sliding doors to the dining room and a kitchen with some fitted units. My children called them Nan and Grandad. When I married we moved to the countryside and, without awareness or thought until today, I realise we have a sitting room, dining room, kitchen and sun room. We have sofas in the sitting room, we eat lunch in the middle of the day and dinner in the evening and when did my children start calling my parents Gran and Grandpa, didn't even notice. Changing times.

In California, Washington State, and (I think) most of the United States we have living rooms and family rooms (where we actually "live"--watch television, read, etc. When I was a child growing up in Michigan state, we called it the front room and didn't have an "extra" room to socialize. We have a master bedroom. It's called it primarily because it's larger than the others and has its own bathroom. We don't live in a mansion or estate.

We always called it the lounge at home and l still tend to but call it a living room sometimes.

Daisydoes Sun 15-Mar-20 17:16:05

The living room, or front room?

Used in the evenings, or when we have visitors.

The back room or family room is used all through the day.

We also have a kitchen and back kitchen ( in addition to boot room).
I thought this was common, but having talked in passing to other people maybe it is not???

Definitely "Living Room" for me. Our house is up for sale (particulars say "Reception room"), and I tell viewers "this is our main living room" - but it does lead to a "Sun room" which runs across the width of the building and has three large windows, double doors to the patio and a second half-glazed door to the side.

We have a drawing room (that's what it was called when I was growing up), and another room called the dining room or the study depending on what we are doing in it ?.
The bedrooms are our room and the kids' rooms, even though the kids left home years ago.
We ' cut the grass' and have never 'mown the lawn', though my parents did!

"Alexa no need for any name when it was a single end ...lol"

"A single end in Rothesay-O"

Mine is my lounge. I think ‘Master Bedroom’ is very grand for what I imagine most of us live in. It’s just ‘my bedroom’.

Blacktabby2 Sun 15-Mar-20 19:03:44

Lounge. Maybe it depends on what part of the country we are in??

cornergran Sun 15-Mar-20 19:23:42

Sitting room here. It’s not big enough for the multiple activities I associate with a living room, it is good to sit in though. We’ve a fairly large conservatory where we have a dining table and comfy chairs, so our living room has a glass roof, smile.

I call ours the living room when it's just me and OH here, but 'the playpen' when dgd is here/has just left. It's a very small room, and once dgd's toys are out, I really do feel like I am in a playpen!

Kim19 Sun 15-Mar-20 19:57:05

Lounge here. It's for high days and holidays. Living room is for the daily joy but is currently under renovation so lounge is taking a beating.

Shizam Sun 15-Mar-20 20:38:01

I think my parents, who were from rural upbringing, said lounge. Sounded posh! And because we had two rooms, also a dining room. I say living room these days. Or the one at front, computer room.

Shirls52000 Sun 15-Mar-20 21:35:10

Sitting room ?

grannypiper Sun 15-Mar-20 22:12:09

My Great Granny had a room and kitchen, she spent most of her time in the kitchen, if she needed anything from the room she sent you "ben the hoose"

CrazyGranny60 Sun 15-Mar-20 22:25:59

Living room.

Evie64 Sun 15-Mar-20 22:34:59

Candelle Sun 15-Mar-20 23:44:39

Sitting room
Dining room
Family room (the messy one!)

MissAdventure Sun 15-Mar-20 23:59:25

Front room, sitting room, living room.
I don't say "lounge" because I know how it would sound with my accent.

Eloethan Mon 16-Mar-20 00:50:19

Sitting room - but what does it matter?

Coolgran65 Mon 16-Mar-20 02:14:51

Living room.
Bedrooms are our room. Back room and wee front room.

Baloothefitz Mon 16-Mar-20 05:26:57

Sitting room, sofa & main bedroom or my bedroom, really don't like master bedroom, cringe when I hear it on house programmes & have told EA not to use it for me personally.

Saggi Mon 16-Mar-20 05:43:17

Sitting room and ‘snug’ ( tele free!)
