While we’re all stuck indoors for the foreseeable, we thought we’d put together a Gransnet daily challenge to keep us all busy and entertained. We’ll post a different challenge every morning on a range of different topics - food, fitness, arts, crafts, writing, etc.

First up...write a haiku about your favourite person or your favourite food.

For those like me who have not yet branched into creative writing of this type, here's how to do it courtesy of wikihow

To write a haiku poem, write a poem that's 3 lines long and make sure each line has the right number of syllables. Give the first line 5 syllables, the second line 7 syllables, and the third line 5 syllables.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

(I love that one, Cunco)

This sunshine conceals
Our sadness and worrying
Stiff upper lip, eh!

Cunco Sun 12-Apr-20 06:43:10

Incessant chime cuts
Night's stillness, nature's call for
Fox on fox action.

Balmy breezy day
Trying to read a good book
Loud droning lawnmower

Bathsheba Sat 11-Apr-20 13:44:38

I've always loved them
Since I came across Haikus
When I was quite young

Marmight Sat 11-Apr-20 13:16:16

I’m in the garden
digging lumps of heavy earth
hoping seeds will sprout

henetha Sat 11-Apr-20 11:11:06

Thank you Bathsheba
Glad you also like Haikus
I think they are fun

gulligranny Fri 10-Apr-20 12:50:13

Tulips are gorgeous
Nodding in the bright sunshine
They lift my spirits

Bathsheba Fri 10-Apr-20 12:06:38

Henetha I'm here
Joining in the Haiku fun
You are not alone!

Bathsheba Fri 10-Apr-20 12:05:02

Can't get hot cross buns
Good Friday's not the same without
Cake will have to do

henetha Fri 10-Apr-20 11:53:03

Looks like I'm the last
One to like writing Haiku
Do join in, someone.

The grass needs cutting
But the birds do not know this
They look out for worms

Some are very sad
Look for positive helpers
Eases the burden

Marmight Tue 07-Apr-20 14:20:57

On my walk today
Sun, swans, geese, ducks wild flowers
My heart was singing

henetha Tue 07-Apr-20 13:32:32

Marmight Sun 05-Apr-20 18:05:52

The age old basket,
Once green, sits dreaming of Spring,
It's roots- It once grew!

May7 Sun 05-Apr-20 14:51:53

Chocolates scrummy
It is all in my tummy
My diets over

Grammaretto Sun 05-Apr-20 13:29:00

inspired by this thread
i wrote 5 haiku for friends
original moi!

henetha Sun 05-Apr-20 12:54:25

Please write a Haiku
Someone out there on GN
Don't let this thread die

Just five syllables
Then it's seven syllables
Then it's five again

henetha Sat 04-Apr-20 12:03:01

I'm liking Haiku
Limericks are an old thread
But Haiku is new

And I like them all
They stretch my brain cells daily
Mental exercise

watermeadow Sat 04-Apr-20 10:22:14

Fed up with haikus
Give us another challenge
Like write a sonnet

Or a limerick
Which can be funny or not
As long as it’s rude

There was an old granny called Maud,
Who said,”I’m incredibly bored.
I’m not allowed out
So I’ll give a shout
To Gransnet to ask what you’re all doing this morning or is this too many syllables? Oh Lord!
