Marathons became Snickers, Opal fruits became Starburst fruits. Telephone always shortened to phone. Bicycle always shortened to Bike. Used to be old Mr. or Mrs where did the term Ms. come from. Dustman now Refuse Collector. Rat/Rodent Man now Pest Controller. When younger we had Lavatory I just call it the Loo. My mums neighbour always called it the Privvy. When did settee become sofa.
My dad always asked my mum for a clean singlet after his bath he meant his vest but it was always his singlet.

Fatgran .Air hostess now flight attendant/cabin crew /staff.
Covers both male and female. This was introduced for obvious reasons.
Flight captain, first officer/flight engineer same applies. covers both male and female.
Ships will have female captains and a female commodore. You will not find any changes, as you may have gathered, where royalty is concerned.

Talking of Americanisation why do people say day on day now instead of day by day?

I queried blue sky thinking and cancer pathways at a Macmillan conference and nearly started a punch up as there were opinions from opinionated people.

We were told that christian name and surname were racist and derogatory and we should ask for forenames and family name. Most foreign people would look puzzled and then ask if we meant christian name and surname.

People who carers care for in this country (not UK) are called "users" users of the service, but a bit condescending I think, guests or clients would be more appropriate.
