When did;

‘Chemists’ become ‘Pharmacists’?

‘Pupils’ become ‘Students’?

‘Chiropodists’ become ‘’Podiatrists’?

‘Holiday’ became ‘Annual Leave’?

Any more?

Train travellers became "customers.
Train guard(or the person in charge of the train)

YOUR next station stop,I don't own it

OUR next station stop,I might not want to get off.

Correct in my opinion. Its THE next station stop.

At terminating stops (not the London ones) change here for
XXXX YYYY and ZZZZ just say all change here

NfkDumpling I had a peripatetic childhood so it could be London, where my family came from, Yorkshire, Carlisle or Berkshire, I will exclude the foreign bits.

You are right furlough is a military term, but in my (military) childhood, it was also used by expats making their careers in foreign countries who got six months home leave every three years.

When did disco become Club?

I resist using most of these Americanisms. A lot of them are euphemistic, something I abhor.

I too dislike bathroom for lavatory, but then I dislike toilet for lavatory just as much. At my infant school in the 1940s we were not allowed to say toilet. It was considered a coy, vulgar euphemism. We said lavatory, which come to think of it is also a euphemism - it means place for washing - but one more lost in the mists of time..

But Patients will always be Patients because that’s what they have to have Patience
Sorry couldn’t resist this old nursing joke

NfkDumpling Fri 03-Apr-20 07:34:11

I thought furlough was a military term?

NfkDumpling Fri 03-Apr-20 07:32:31

It must be a Norwich/Norfolk thing then M0nica. Cupcakes didn't exist in my young world, buns was the generic.

LullyDully Fri 03-Apr-20 07:31:05

How about knickers becoming panties. I hate bathroom for toilet/ loo/ lav.
Toilet tissue , not toilet paper.
Endless evolution of language in our fast connected world.
My granny called her Christmas presents her Christmas box.

BBbevan Fri 03-Apr-20 05:36:24

Furlough did we use that before?

BradfordLass73 Fri 03-Apr-20 05:13:47

I heard a very good description from a pharmacist on a DVD I was watching:

'It's the chemist who makes the drugs and the pharmacist who dispenses them.' Perhaps just a little simplistic as pharmacists are highly trained - but in essence, quite correct.

I think Annual Leave is not a new thing. It's always been used in Nursing, Social Care etc. Maybe Government Depts use it mainly.

My children take the pee when I say wireless or frock. smile

Artdecogran Thu 02-Apr-20 17:27:18

Metropolitan Police Force became Police Service. What’s wrong with being forceful in pursuit of criminals?

BlueBelle Thu 02-Apr-20 16:38:27

A wireless became a radio
Boudicca (Bo da cea) became Bo dick a
Nestles became neslays
And Porch became porch a

MamaCaz Thu 02-Apr-20 16:33:24

... staff/employees become colleagues?

To me, signs that say things like 'Colleagues' Parking', or instruct customers to 'ask a colleague if you need help' just sound plain daft!

M0nica Thu 02-Apr-20 16:23:34

Nfkdumpling In my life a bun was something very different to a cupcake or fairy cake.

A bun was usually made from a yeast dough as in Hot Cross buns, Chelsea buns

As a child (1950s) a great treat was a bought box of chocolate cupcakes. A sticky chocolate cake with a layer of smooth fudgy chocolate icing on top in a silver foil backed paper case.

Fairy cakes was a generic term for a home made cake in a paper case with butter-icing on top and a cherry or sprinkles on top.

My grandfather (who died in 1911) was a pharmacist. He owned a chemist & druggist shop.

H1954 Thu 02-Apr-20 16:19:34

Peers become cohort?????

M0nica Thu 02-Apr-20 16:14:47

Chiropodists become podiatrists

Humbertbear Pharmacists work in a chemists grin. Though to be fair, I often wondered when I was younger why they were called chemists when the person who worked there was a pharmacist.

curvygran Thu 02-Apr-20 16:13:09

Garages became filling ,petrol and gas stations.

kittylester Thu 02-Apr-20 15:33:58

NfkDumpling Thu 02-Apr-20 15:25:21

Buns become cup cakes / fairy cakes

Baked potato become jacket potato

Or are they local names?

And where did the proper English muffin go?

AGAA4 Thu 02-Apr-20 15:22:49

Americanisms are creeping in. Purse instead of handbag. Bangs instead of fringe.

SueDonim Thu 02-Apr-20 15:19:15

The term pupil comes from a Latin word, meaning a “minor or ward” while student comes from the Latin for study. So I suppose originally, under-18’s were regarded as the ward of their teacher.
