TV in these difficult times

Thanks for reminding me about Liz R, chestnut.

I've found Six Wives on DVD (Amazon) and put it in my basket, ready for when all this is over. Something to look forward to.

oldgimmer1 - I haven't seen Henry lately but I bought Elizabeth R on DVD. As I said, they are very slow and wordy and require much concentration. They are so different from today's productions which are faster and more visual. I just wonder how younger folk would cope, I'm not sure they would have the patience to sit through them.

Six Wives of Henry!! That's a blast from the past. I'd love to see that again. Wasn't Dorothy Tutin in it as Anne Boleyn and Annette Crosbie as Katherine of Aragon?

Olliebeak, could you try using set top box with your tv? I broke the aerial bit on a nearly new television few years back, not under guarantee, and the replacement part was almost as much cost as a new tv. So, I was advised just to attach a set topbox, wbich I did. and this worked reasonably well.

There was the Six Wives of Henry 8th (Keith Michell) and Elizabeth R (Glenda Jackson) which were both TV series. However, I must warn people that these old TV series by today's standards are incredible sloooooow. It takes a while to get into them. They are very wordy, and you have to settle down and accept the lengthy dialogue without getting fidgety. It takes some getting used to. I've watched several of them and ultimately they are very rewarding with excellent acting, but they very much demand your concentration.

I think we need some good comedy, such as a Billy Connolly, John Bishop............

I’d quite like the original Poldark.

Films:
Ditto to whoever mentioned Blithe Spirit, lovely, funny escapist stuff. A young American niece used to want to watch it every time she visited (our old VHS copy).
Whistle Down The Wind is another.

Much more recent ones I’d love to see again are Spotlight and The Big Short, both brilliant IMO.

TV series, all the old Joan Hickson Miss Marples - they knock spots off the buggered-about more recent remakes.

I find it all so similar. Not enough imagination or variety for me.

I have a short attention span for tv. If I decide to watch I usually just scroll through the guide to see what happens to be on. I do record a few series, mainly quiz programmes, which keep my brain ticking over. I like nature and gardening programmes, and sometimes drop on an interesting documentary or two. Variety is the spice of life. I couldn’t sit and watch hour after hour of a series, and am not often attracted to films. I prefer to read, go for a walk or do some gardening.

Bouquet of Barbed Wire is another one on Britbox.

Would love to see the whole of Bouquet of Barbed Wire. That was one programme I was always sent out to sit on the stairs when the naughty bits came on and called back in when they were over. TV nowadays, I would probably spend a lot of time sitting on the stairs....

As I am now confined to barracks I find myself switching between channels and I like channel 63 where there are some strange programmes about aliens and then Storage Wars and then the weird Hardcore Pawn or Pawn Stars … well its a bit different to your average programs.... try it...

I've done something stupid with my TV - coincided with all this current shenanigans! I've broken the bit inside my TV set - where my Freeview Aerial fits in. I'm so lost without Freeview.

So I went and got myself a 'Now TV Stick' - what a load of twaddle that's turned out to be! It's all about Sky - with a very paltry 'hub service' for terrestrial telly. I'm really missing my regular channels and timings - especially Talking Pictures

I have my favourites .
I like Bargain Hunt at Lunchtime .
Mainly BBC , start the day with Breakfast Show until 9.
late afternoon Pointless .
Although 1st and 3rd options are normally repeats .
The evening news national and local , One Show, can vary after that depending on the day.
Sunday, I have stated to enjoy Race across the World at 8 on 2 .
Sometimes I just channel scroll, the oldie film on Talking Pictures plus Film 4 .

I've just started watching my Downton Abbey dvds,so plenty to watch there.As for the tv,why have they such a limited number of things to put on to replace regular soaps etc.It's always got to be Harry Hill, or the same few films that fans of them will have already seen loads of times.I'm sure they could do better.

It's not so easy just to re-run major series - the channels don't necessarily own them and there'll be rights and payment issues. I don't watch TV in the daytime at all (If I did my mother would haunt me; I can almost hear her sniffing and telling me it's "common") so I don't really need any more than what there is in the evenings. My favourites are Friday night BBC4, for the music programmes.
