Why have there been so many Virus films/TV?

Watching Sherlock last night and it was all about Bird Flu. Have also noticed several other programs have shown a virus situation, such as Red Dwarf.
Do you think the schedulers are trying to tell us something?

Wait until the SOAPS adapt into there story line.
Again getting the message across , the things are going its going to get hard not tough .
