Is corned beef and Spam still on general sale - or do you find it on the dark web? hmm

Rufus2 Tue 14-Apr-20 13:17:50

I make corned beef hash with fried onions and potatoes and then when it’s nicely browned in the frying pan I put an egg on top - serve with plenty of tomato sauce and it’s delicious ?

spam fritters, chips and peas - we had that at school on Fridays

shock Did yer not have fish or cheese pie? heathens

I'm transported back to primary school on a Friday, to fish in batter with a slice of lemon on top & mash potato; alternate weeks it was cheese pie - oh, I can just taste that tangy cheddar!

A bit of reverie there! grin

Maw yes we have corned beef hash every so often. I make it with a pile of chips mixed in and bound together with beaten eggs.
Sounds yuccky but we adore it. It was a staple when we first got married as we had to budget fiercely.

I believe that Spam may not be available in Britain for much longer. Tulip foods who produce the product have been heavily loss making for the past three years.

In a worldwide financial restructuring package announced in October the holding company of Tulip foods, Leverandørselskabet Danish Crown Amba, announced the closure of both its two production plants in Britain which will come into effect in the next few months.

Ironically the company stated that it was the loss of low-cost European labour working in these plants due to brexit contributed to the reason for the British closures

Talking of tinned meat - has anybody made Corned Beef Hash recently?
A little place in Woburn (Nicholl’s Brasserie for any who knew it) where Paw and I used to enjoy Saturday brunch used to make a wonderful Corned Beef Hash with a lightly poached egg on the top....

Ooh nom nom.....spam fritters, chips and peas - we had that at school on Fridays with a sauce that was like tomato soup but thicker. Maybe I’ll add Spam to my next shop and give my DH a surprise dinner! ?

SirChenjin Tue 14-Apr-20 12:14:16

<Nervously raises hand>

SueDonim Tue 14-Apr-20 12:09:22

Charleygirl5 Tue 14-Apr-20 12:07:54

I for one will not be buying spam or corned beef- yuk.

When my dad bought his first shop it was a dairy/grocers and had a large walk in fridge to store all the cold meats that were sliced as the customer requested using the big rotary slicer . He always took off the first slice and discarded it so the customer had a fresh surface on each slice.
One lady used to come in with her dog and dad would give that first slice of ham, roast beef etc to the dog who would chomp it down except when he was given the slice from the Spam. That was totally rejected! Dad never brought Spam home as he reckoned that if it wasn’t good enough for the dog then we didn’t need to eat it either!

Unbelievably, Spam was a treat when I was growing up, I seem to remember it was served with branston pickle and salad on Saturdays smile

EllanVannin Tue 14-Apr-20 11:42:06

I used to like the battered Spam but I don't see it around any more.
I think corned beef is more like cat and dog food, smells like it too.

Can't wait for a piece of rump steak with onions grin

Megs36 Tue 14-Apr-20 11:36:20

We love it...are we that odd, always keep actin in the fridge.

MawB Tue 14-Apr-20 11:34:02

Well if it does we’d better be sure and use that “report” button!

MiniMoon Tue 14-Apr-20 11:23:13

Mick, one day last week my husband and I had Spam, chips and baked beans for dinner.
It was a blast from the past!

Rosalyn69 Tue 14-Apr-20 11:21:20

Oh please God no.

glammanana Tue 14-Apr-20 11:17:14

Wow that takes me back to my grandma's house on a Saturday when she ran a boarding house she would have a plate of the disgusting stuff in the middle of the table set out for her lodgers whilst they played cards after work.Lets hope it doesn't become popular again Yeuky.

ginny Tue 14-Apr-20 11:05:02

Yeuk! I hope not. My DH loves it but I think it looks and smells like cat or dog food and cheap ones at that.

Willow500 Tue 14-Apr-20 10:58:43

My husband likes Spam and often has a sandwich of it - I hate it - nasty pink stuff yuk! grin

Just a thought watching Daily Kitchen Live , references to WW2 as meals using recipes out of cans .
The above although popular as a fritter will it start to get fame, like other cans of Pork Luncheon Meat.
