Sorry for the interruption and side issue, but I was drawn here by on old post from @GrammaH about a very old Christmas recipe from Good Housekeeping for Smoked Salmon Soup. Whilst having a clear out - I found a cutting with the image of the recipe, but with no actual recipe - so I'm desperately trying to hunt it down. (Strange times do strange things to us, she seems to be still posting, so fingers crossed !)

i think originally postcodes were related to posties' walks and how their sacks were arranged.
so in a densely built up area with long roads, might be part of one road, but in more sparse areas, or lots of short roads a postcode covers a wider area.
anyway we learn as we go.

The main databases are Royal Mail, Openreach and XOserve.

Company websites usually (almost always) have a box where you fill in your postcode, after which a drop-down box appears for you to choose your address from the list, which you click on. Job done.
Of course if your property is on a new estate or it's a very small company who have no database, then it follows that you'll have to fill in the whole address.

Yes, I use the what three words app. As the OP says, it's invaluable.

Our whole hamlet has the same post code and all properties have names. Luckily our posties are excellent!

are any of you using what3words. Google it! Much more accurate than a post code,and if everyone was using it (more and more delivery companies are) nothing would every go astray again. The whole world is gridded into 3 metre squares,and each square has a random 3 words allocated to it.
Free app on your phone. Ooh-just seen someone else has put up a post about it too.

I m not sure what you’re annoyed about ninathenana they are just doing a correct job You made a mistake and gave an incomplete address, so sorry but it is your fault we all make silly mistakes like that, but you really can’t blame the company

The intention when PCs were introduced was fairly simple. Unfortunately a lot areas were not treated the same way and alterations had to be made together with new properties and high rises let alone businesses sharing same codes, divided properties and more.

So the three words system will overcome all that (hopefully!) and then all of us will be 'on the map'.

Where I used to live my post code covered a wide area. I rember there were two with my number. Why would someone not put their complete address? It takes no time to do that.

We're right in the sticks and our postcode covers a large area with about 12 properties in it. The roads don't have names so, even with the full address & postcode, some delivery companies don't manage to find us!!

I wonder why all these courier companies do not have the what three words app.
Nobody can find my house as it is hidden behind a house that used to be a pub.
I have What Three Words on my phone, and I gave one delivery driver the three words for my garden gate, he was there in a couple of minutes.
For those who dont know, the world is divided into 3m×3m squares, each square is given a unique 3 word address. The app is worth having, as it has saved the lives of lost people.
Also some countries have adopted it as their postal addresses.

Half of our little village have the same post code so it might be difficult for them.x

I ordered a card for my daughter, put in her postcode and almost loads of addresses came up. So it's vital to check you put an address on.

It was an oversight, I didn't realise I'd not put the street.
If you enter my post code it brings up just my street which is one long road connecting two areas of town with no other roads leading off. I thought your postcode only covered a few houses not a couple of streets. Surprised to know that.

Rediculous you only have to look it up.
I found a puzzle app on line for dh, hasn’t looked at it yet.

Yes but some postcodes go over many streets so your house number could be repeated. You really do need to add the street.

But when we add house number and postcode to an order, isn’t it then our place to click on the link to give the actual address....or was that not possible with your order?

Obviously not!
