ROAST POTATOES! On a TUESDAY!!!

Deliberate shouty capitals!

Well, he's done it now, this is a step too far!

I've just about got used to the fact he's here all day, albeit mainly in the home office (wfh), and comes down for lunch (who said " I married him for better or worse, but not for lunch?) but this takes the biscuit!

When asked to buy a SMALL piece of lamb for Easter, he bought a whole leg confused at considerable expense.

So, I roasted it, then sliced the leftovers and put them in the freezer.

Tonight I had planned to heat some of it up in gravy and have it with broccoli and mashed potatoes, a tub of which I had in the freezer.

Apparently, that's not quite what he fancied! (I fancy lobster, but can't have it!)

So he said "Can we have roast potatoes for a change?"

A CHANGE? What does he think we had with the beef on Sunday??? (Which I think was only the day before yesterday, but couldn't swear to it)

So, please, may I ask, does this constitute unreasonable behaviour?

The mash would have just needed zapping in the microwave (home made mash, btw, lots of butter and black pepper, dash of cream and a hint of grated nutmeg).

But now I've got to peel, parboil etc, with more damn washing up (we don't have a dishwasher) Humph!

Perhaps I could broker a deal, I'll do the damn roast potatoes if he stops leaving the sodding toilet seat up!

And breathe..........

All this talk of lovely food is making my tummy rumble - I’m very jealous envy Mr Chen’s offerings for dinner tonight are definitely below par.

YY to cauliflower cheese as a side dish - it’s a firm favourite here, even with the 13 year old who is still quite suspicious of vegetables.

Grandmafrench Tue 21-Apr-20 16:06:02

No, we don't Phoenix but only because we possibly might not cope with the excitement. But see previous post for just how much we love Cauliflower cheese.

Grandmafrench Tue 21-Apr-20 16:04:30

Pretty damn good, Gabriella
Cauliflower cheese, yessss! But Bubble & Squeak, even more yesssssss! If you have loads of leftovers, especially veggies, and you put them in the fridge or freezer so you can whip 'em out (God, I sound like that simpering Nigella!) like magic and serve up further delicious meals, everyone's pleased and you can quickly hurry back to sofa surfing and doin' nuffink in a seamless way - never breaking any rules for the new CBA Club!

Riverwalk of course it wont! As Mr P is wont to say "Standards darling, standards!"

(Does anyone else sometimes have cauliflower cheese as a side dish with a roast, or is it just me?)

Riverwalk Tue 21-Apr-20 15:50:03

Cauliflower cheese with a roast shock

I hope the gravy is on one side of the plate and doesn't touch the cheese sauce!

phoenix Tue 21-Apr-20 15:44:30

Gabriella* that's brilliant! grin Although I don't think Mr P would ever be thin, he's quite a well built chap (not fat, of course wink) Minnie (cat) seems to think of him as a sort of feline water bed confused when she joins us on the sofa in the evening.

Absolutely love bubble and squeak! Sadly, won't be on the menu tomorrow as no cabbage or sprouts tonight, and have only done enough pots for tonight.

Yesss...cold roasties dipped in salt, bubble n squeak, bring it on.
You have great taste (bar the spam) ?

GabriellaG54 Tue 21-Apr-20 15:29:07

Phoenix

You hear stirring ?but there's no-one there
You smell burning ?but the kitchen's bare
All day long you cook delicious fare?
You wonder why
You wonder why

He keeps tossing in his sleep at night ?
And what's more he's lost his appetite ?
Stars that used to twinkle in his eyes ??
Are dim and half the size✨
You wonder why
You wonder why

It don't need analyzing
It is not so surprising
That he looks very strange and thin
Your heart goes pitter patter?
But you know what's the matter
You'll just have to sigh and give in

With his head on your shoulder
You should be that bit bolder
Give him a rub down with your oven glove
There are ROASTIES you could make
To relieve his stomach ache
He's not sick, he's just in love ?‍❤️‍?‍???

phoenix Tue 21-Apr-20 15:22:12

moggie57 A year? Urm, no!

phoenix Tue 21-Apr-20 15:18:55

moggie57 I used to keep a small flock of sheep, highest standards of welfare, however this is possibly not the thread for that discussion?

Urmstongran Tue 21-Apr-20 15:18:50

Such a shame we’re in lockdown phoenix I’d love to pull up a chair to your table!

I adore potatoes.
Mash, roast, chips, jacket, dauphinoise, rosti ...
I was gutted years ago when I found out as veg they weren’t one of our 5-a-day ‼️

phoenix Tue 21-Apr-20 15:16:57

moggie57 see previous response!

phoenix Tue 21-Apr-20 15:15:16

I know, SirChenjin, that coupled with the face he pulled when I asked him to look at my newly developed skin tag.............

Not my fault that I can't look at it, despite contortions. My neck will never recover, it wasn't designed to move that way.

moggie57 Tue 21-Apr-20 15:11:56

cant he do the cooking?.anyway am doing the 30 day vegan thing. leg of lamb yuk .i havent eaten any animal for over 40 yrs. little lamb with his/her mummy. joyfully playing in a field gets to a year old .taken away from mum .transported and squashed in a truck to the slaughter house. stunned with electric shock and chopped up just so people can eat it. how grossssssssssss!!! .

SirChenjin Tue 21-Apr-20 15:04:33

You actually do need to LTB

Roast potatoes on a Tuesday indeed....

Cabbie21 Tue 21-Apr-20 15:00:18

Mr Cabbie loves mashed potatoes and will have them for every meal quite happily, so I am the one who insists on some variety. Last Sunday we were eating up sliced roast lamb from the freezer, but I still put the little oven on to do roast potatoes and parsnips. We don’t like parsnips cooked any other way, and there are always some in my vegi box, so that is my justification.
He does expect his meals to be as routine as normal, which is a bit of a pain, when we can’t always get what we normally buy. We are not going to shops ourselves, so we rely on deliveries and a neighbour. DH asks me every week what we will get in the vegi box and the answer is the same, it will be whatever they send.

phoenix Tue 21-Apr-20 14:14:02

Too late, GrannySomerset, already peeled and labelled ready for later.

And, idiot that I am, decided that as I'm sort of doing a roast, I may as well use the rest of the cauliflower that's in the fridge, and a bit of cheese sauce wouldn't go amiss with it confused

Oh well, chilli from the freezer tomorrow!

Although, I could turn that stolen sirloin steak into stroganov? blush

GrannySomerset Tue 21-Apr-20 13:52:49

You spoil him, phoenix. In these straightened times, she who does the cooking makes the decisions, especially about how much effort is involved in each meal. Give him mash!

glammanana Tue 21-Apr-20 13:51:10

Coming down to washing up is one of most hated things Phoenix I remember my mum always told me before I got married that the kitchen always looks tidy with an empty sink & draining board Mr G god bless him would take your plate and have it washed and put away whilst you where on your last mouthful grin

Lisagran Tue 21-Apr-20 13:47:52

Fair do’s

phoenix Tue 21-Apr-20 13:42:50

GabriellaG54 if you think I'm prepared to b**ger about shaping mashed potato into quenelles, let alone making bloody breadcrumbs, then may I politely suggest you have a lie down in a dark room before the delusions really take hold! grin

Lisagran I'm WFH but only 2 days a week, albeit on an ad hoc basis, rather than 2 full days, himself is actually WFH from around 8.30 to 5ish, therefore household stuff seems to come my way.

In fairness, he does sometimes offer to wash up after supper, but as it's along the lines of "leave that, I'll do it in the morning" and I'm usually up before him, and hate coming down to see it..........

12Michael Tue 21-Apr-20 13:37:04

Roasties are great cold , also I can remember my parents and grand parents as to Sunday Roasts ,
Monday : Cold with left overs making a bubble & Squeak
Tuesday: Remaining joint , mince it and make a cottage or shepherds pie.
Wednesday : use bones to make a stock
Mick

Pantglas2 Tue 21-Apr-20 13:36:38

I don’t give himself much choice in the matter, but lots of variety! We haven’t had the same main meal twice in three weeks (if you count Indian and Thai curries separately ).

Not sure why I bother really as he’ll eat cheese and onion sandwiches every day for lunch if I let him! I run through half a dozen different breakfast/brunches in the week just to stop each day being samey!

grandMattie Tue 21-Apr-20 13:31:18

Why don’t you suggest he does it himself. That’s what I tell DH if I think he’s being unreasonable. He soon changes his mind ?
